Justice Dictonary.Com defines a vigilante as: any person who takes the law into his or her own hands, as by avenging a crime.
To understand why that is not even applicable in America today requires and understanding about what the Constitution of our Republic actually is.
Many falsely believe that the Constitution is the document that gives a human being their rights. This is false. People have a body and that body comes with rights, powers and responsibilities. This is firmly established in the Preamble, a section that many just blow by on their way to the meat of our founding document.
All men and women are kings and queens to one another and sovereign. We do whatever we want provided We:
Meet the terms of our contracts
Do not injure another king or queen
Impinge on the rights of another king Or queen.
We all got together and made a contract. We are all willful parties to that contract. The Constitution itself is the simple exercise of just one of the many rights and powers a human being has the ability to exercise and that is:
"We the People" have the right to create a Constitutional Government.
It is and was in our power to create a Constitution and because it made the most sense to select a Republic then "We the People" created the Constitution to control the Government it established by contract.
We as people felt it was more convenient to give the government certain powers because, although we retain the power to do so, it was easier for us to refrain from the exercise of our power and permit the government to do so on our behalf.
One of the more important powers given to the Republic by, "We the People” was Our power to administer and establish a system of justice.
This justice system is to bring violators of a crime to justice and force those in breach into compliance to meet the terms of the contracts for all contracts, which we are all able and willing to make.
Does that mean we as a human being do not have the right power to do so on our own? No, we just let the government do it for us and we hold ourselves each of us to that contract where we restrict ourselves from exercising that power.
It was convenient because we human beings did not want to waste our time administer justice for ourselves as we have better things to do then hunting down the crooks who do us wrong.
