I was dragged, unenthusiastic, to see Dream Girls yesterday, and found myself joining a sold out audience in repeated moments of clapping. Now, maybe, if a movie is really good, at the end, a handful of people will clap. But for the first time in any move I've ever seen, a LOT of people were clapping at repeated points throughout the movie. This is a very good movie that touches the viewer in many different ways-- by pulling heartstrings, with extraordinary music and singing and a great plot. Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson promise to be sure nominees for best supporting actor and actress. Murphy's singing is extraordinary. The word is he performed as a singer before doing comedy. Jennifer Hudson's story is great. She was panned by Simon Cowell if American Idol, only to get a phone call from him, while she was on the Oprah show, where apologized, ate his words and congratulated her. Boy, does she deserve it. After one of her scenes in the movie, singing, I thought to myself, "This is the best singing scene I've ever seen." This is a musical. There are scenes where dialogue is sung. it works great. The actors are superb, and, every major role is acted by an African American actor. This could be a first, at least for a movie that doesn't have Oprah in it. The movie is being released slowly. Less than 900 theaters showed it on Christmas day and the response exceeded the projected turnout. Marketers had expected this to draw a primarily black and upscale audience. But apparently, it is getting such strong buzz, it is drawing from a much wider demographic. It should be. This is a great movie with great actors, great music and a great storyline. Don't wait to be dragged to see it like I was. Run. Here's the trailer. About six tenths in, you get to hear a sample of Hudson's singing. It's worth the wait. Don't get me wrong. Beyonce is great and gorgeous, but Hudson, wellll, you check her out. I say she's extraordinary. an apology. I don't consider myself a movie reviewer, just a fan with a reader base I like to share my pleasures with. BTW, check out www.IMDB.com for more information on the movie. If you've never used the Internet Movie Database, and you're a movie fan, you're in for a treat.
