WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 17) - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) was elected today to chair the Domestic Policy Subcommittee of the Government Reform Committee.

Kucinich, now in his sixth term in Congress, began his public career in 1967 as a candidate for Cleveland City Council. He has a broad and a deep background of 40 years in domestic policy as a citizen activist and through his service as a city councilman, clerk of courts, Mayor of Cleveland and state senator.

Issue areas within Domestic Policy Subcommittee jurisdiction include labor, pensions, energy, environment, telecommunications, health care, anti-trust, Native Americans, housing, infrastructure, election integrity, among others. Government agencies falling within the subcommittee's jurisdiction include the departments of Labor, Commerce, Interior, Energy, among others.

Kucinich also will have oversight jurisdiction over the Federal Communications Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, the National Labor Relations Board, the Department of Justice Anti-trust division, OSHA, the National Drug Control Policy, the Environmental Protection Agency, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, among others.

"My subcommittee will endeavor to reestablish oversight over regulatory agencies which were created to protect the public interest. I will be asking questions about the operations of every federal department and expect to be able to bring to public light information that has been hidden for the last six years.

"In doing so, we'll be able to provide other Congressional committees with potential for new policy directions. We have a mandate to investigate government agency enforcement of the law and thereby contribute to new policy directions."
