Happy Constitution Day everyone!

Our namesake, Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, was a fervent believer in the concept of a living Constitution, and as you'll see from our work below, we can never take our Constitutional rights for granted.

ATTORNEY GENERAL NOMINEE MICHAEL MUKASEY

The Brennan Center believes former federal judge Michael Mukasey has a strong record and the potential to be a good Attorney General. The key question, however, is whether he will take stock of the politicization of the Justice Department and whether he'll return to the enshrined notion of limited executive power. Brennan Center Executive Director Michael Waldman, an attorney and former member of the Clinton Administration, is available to discuss Mukasey's nomination.

NAMUDNO V. GONZALES
Arguments were heard today in a case that presents a sweeping challenge to the Voting Rights Act and Congress's ability to protect the rights of citizens. Myrna Perez is available to discuss the case and the Constitutional consequences if Congressional authority is overriden.

FLORIDA VOTING LAW CHALLENGED
The Brennan Center and other voting rights advocates filed a lawsuit to strike down a Florida voter registration law that could disenfranchise tens of thousands of eligible voters from participating in elections. Justin Levitt is the lead counsel on the case and can explain why the no-match, no-vote law creates a bureaucratic process that could keep legitimate voters away from the polls.

CONSTITUTION DAY!
Brennan Center fellow Eric Lane and former New York Times national editor and current International Herald Tribune editor Michael Oreskes have a Constitution Day post and a new book titled The Genius of America: How the Constitution Saved Our Country--and Why it Can Again. What better way to celebrate Constitution Day than by bringing these Constitutional authorities on your program to discuss this very timely book.

Of the book, former NY Governor Mario Cuomo noted, ""Our Constitution properly understood and applied could restore the nation's equilibrium...It might also have avoided the tragedy of Iraq by prompting Congress to use its power under Article 1 to declare or not declare war, as well as to end it. Lane and Oreskes summon us to restore our Constitution's efficacy by our reconnecting with its history and its intelligence. They do it brilliantly."
