My guest today is Allegra Dengler, long-time, stalwart election integrity activist and New York resident.

Joan Brunwasser: Welcome to OpEdNews, Allegra. What's new on the voting front in New York? Would you like to get the ball rolling for us?

Allegra Dengler: With the overall anxiety about what's going to happen in 2020, this is the moment for the New York State legislature to step up and give us elections we can believe in.

We have hand marked paper ballots in New York, but even if a candidate loses by only one vote, the only way to a hand count of all the ballots is through the courts, and courts have not been kind to "losing" candidates.

Despite the heightened concerns about hacking by Russian or other bad actors, New York still doesn't have automatic hand counts in close races, the right of a candidate to a recount or audits sufficient to detect fraud. [*See exceptions below]

As Citizens for Voting Integrity New York, we have long been advocating for hand counts of the paper ballots sufficient to verify the accuracy of the scanner count.
