We are about to find out which country and what people, Congress really represents. After lengthy negotiations, it appears the US and Iran have worked out the framework for a treaty that would prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. This should be great news for the American public, as any treaty that prevents the spread of nuclear weapons is a positive thing, and by and large the US public seems to approve the treaty, and well they should. Such a treaty would not only benefit the US public, but it would be a great thing for all people of the world, however there is one leader, who is very unhappy with any such treaty. How anyone could be opposed to such a treaty defies logic, however there is one world leader who was opposed to negotiating the treaty in the first place, and now is set on sabotaging the treaty any way possible. Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel; has railed against negotiating the treaty, and now rails against its approval, and will do anything to undermine and destroy it.
Unfortunately for the US public, and the people of the world, Mr Netanyahu carries much influence in the US Congress, and AIPAC, the all-powerful lobbying group, which amplifies the will of Mr. Netanyahu and his right wing party in Israel controls many members of Congress. Without a doubt, AIPAC is one the most powerful political groups in this country, and will use its clout to convince members of the US Congress to sabotage the treaty by any means possible. The Republican Party is pretty much held captive by AIPAC, and therefore will support sabotaging the treaty. One must question then, who the republicans are representing? Does their anti-treaty position in any way do any good for the US public, or does it immeasurably put the US public in a very bad position? Rejecting the treaty would almost guarantee a war with Iran in the near future, which has been Netanyahu's goal all along, and on several occasions, Netanyahu has vowed to sabotage the treaty, saying he will do anything to kill it. A US war with Iran does not, in any way help the US public; it only harms them, and the Republican Party is putting another nation's interests ahead of what is in the best interests of the American public. One argument critics are using in their irrational attacks on the treaty is their view that Iran cannot be trusted, however those critics fail to explain that this treaty is not based on trust, but on the most intensive system of monitoring and inspections the world has ever seen. There would be no hiding a clandestine nuclear weapons program as the inspections will consist of human eyes as well as sophisticated electronic surveillance.
Democrats also will be under the gun with immense pressure being applied by the pro-Israel, pro Netanyahu, lobby group, so it will be most interesting to see who succumbs to the pressure and sells out their country. Some suggest Republicans will not necessarily have the monopoly on selling out the interests of the US public. Time will soon tell.
This epic struggle will demonstrate to Americans where the loyalties of both parties lay. Do they put another country's interests ahead of what is good for the American people, or do they sacrifice the US public to a foreign leader? Watch your Congressman closely. Any member of the US Congress who puts the interests of a foreign nation before the US public, does not deserve your vote, unless it is a vote of rejection.
