On Sept. 16, Jon Stewart announced his "Rally to Restore Sanity," Sat Oct. 30, on the National Mall, noon til 3 pm.
Casually dubbed The Million Moderate March, it's destined to be an event of comedic proportions.
Finally boomers have a rally that isn't a protest rally - this is a rally about what we WANT. Have we finally discovered the freedom and liberation in moving forward instead of fighting against what we don't want?
Stewart notes, "Think of our event as Woodstock, but with the nudity and drugs replaced by respectful disagreement; the Million Man March, only a lot smaller, and a bit less of a sausage fest."
He advises, "Take it down a notch ... stop shouting, throwing and drawing Hitler
mustaches on people other than Hitler."
When Arianna Huffington offered to pay the bus fare for any New Yorkers who wanted to go, 11,000 RSVP'ed in the affirmative.
Stephen Colbert countered with his "March to Keep Fear Alive." Same time, same place.
Oprah Winfrey showed her support for Jon and Stephen's "Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" with a gift for Jon's whole audience last week: under their seats were tickets to go to the rally!
Few would disagree that it might be useful to have a little bit more sanity in the world. (Sorry, Stephen, there's plenty of fear already.)
