Congressman Robert Wexler, District 19, Florida

Tuesday, July 15, 2008, the Hon. Robert Wexler (D-FL) will be the guest on the Basham and Cornell Radio Show, 8 a.m. Pacific Time (11 a.m. Eastern) on AM 1230 KLAV, Las Vegas, and live on the internet at www.bashamandcornell.com/ (This interview will also be archived.)

Wexler’s interview last Thursday, July 10, was cut short to just over 20 minutes when he had to run to vote on a bill, and he graciously agreed to return to “finish what we started.” He addressed a number of topics on Thursday, including Rove and FISA.

On June 10, 2008, Wexler co-sponsored and signed Congressman Dennis Kucinich's (D-OH) Articles of Impeachment, and stated: "President Bush deliberately created a massive propaganda campaign to sell the war in Iraq to the American people and the charges detailed in this impeachment resolution indicate an unprecedented abuse of executive power."

Wexler has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1997, representing Florida's 19th Congressional District.

Wexler opens his new book Fire Breathing Liberal: How I Learned to Survive (and Thrive) in the Contact Sport of Congress, by saying, “I want to proclaim on every page of this book that I am a liberal Democrat and proud of it.”

AfterDowningStreet.org calls the book, “(A) remarkably open and honest book for a politician to have put into the light of day. If you want to know how Washington works, read this book.”

Kirkus reviews states, “With enthusiasm and candor, a passionate Democratic congressman gives readers an inside look at the House of Representatives during a period of declining government accountability … After loudly decrying the Clinton impeachment on the grounds that the president did not betray his country, he now declares that a worthy candidate for impeachment currently sits in the White House. Yet Wexler never loses humor or optimism. His wife, children and belief in democracy keep him grounded and working hard for civility and the ideals on which the nation was founded … Wexler’s approachable, eye-opening political autobiography overflows with intriguing detail and insight.”

Congressman Wexler has endorsed Sen. Barack Obama as a candidate for the 2008 Presidential election. On May 31, 2008, Wexler spoke at the Democratic National Committee's Rules and Bylaws Committee meeting on behalf of the Obama campaign. He argued for a reinstatement of both pledged and superdelegates from the State of Florida to the 2008 Democratic National Convention, with both exercising a half vote at the Convention.

After the release of the controversial new book by former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan, Wexler went on record as saying he would like McClellan to testify under oath about the crimes of the Bush Administration. The Bush Administration has claimed that such proceedings would be a violation of executive privilege.

The Basham and Cornell Radio Show is the only progressive radio show in Las Vegas. Doug Basham and Lydia Cornell have been doing the show together for over a year and a half, as volunteers.

Cornell says that the show receives “thousands of emails from everywhere … and people in Arizona, Seattle, and even Arkansas are listening. We have tons of callers and regulars each day.”

Lydia Cornell is an American actress, writer, and blogger as well as talk-radio host, having co-starred in Too Close for Comfort, and most recently, on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. Cornell’s blog, Lydia Cornell, was a 2006 and 2005 Koufax Award double nominee for best writing, and is “a consistently thought-provoking firecracker of pointed socio-political commentary and observant, caustic wit.” (Shotgun Reviews.)

John Conley, a Marine combat vet, sent Cornell his Purple Heart for her courage in standing up to Ann Coulter’s “extermination speak.” Coulter retaliated by posting Cornell’s home phone number and private information on her website, resulting in death threats and hate mail. Cornell’s new book, formerly titled How To Talk to Ann Coulter IF YOU MUST, will be out before the election.
