I was in Europe soon after 9/11 and was moved by the signs in so many windows reading "We are all Americans!" or "Nous sommes tous Americains!" In a more recent show of solidarity in the face of death and horror, signs reading "Je suis Charlie!" went up around the world after the killings in Paris.
Many people who are not Black have been shocked and saddened by the murders in the Charleston, S.C., church. Some have demanded that South Carolina stop flying the Confederate flag over its buildings. Deep and true solidarity will be essential for massive, sweeping, persistent action across the nation, and may we begin by saying, "We Are All Emanuel A.M.E. Church!"
