Smoke from Israel's assault on Gaza
When one looks at the current crisis in Gaza-and not to oversimplify it- it could have been resolved long ago if a truly independent sovereign Palestinian state had been established by the UN adjacent to Israel based on the pre-1967 borders.
That of course never happened and the current crisis in Gaza has its roots in that failure.
On its own Israel would never allow such a Palestinian state to exist adjacent to it.
Israel would have had to be compelled to accept it.
Let's not forget it was the UN that established Israel in May 1948 by the partition of Palestine into a Jewish and Arab state. Arab groups were against the partition and war broke out but eventually ended when Israel's neighbors Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and Transjordan accepted the reality of Israel's existence.
So as the UN did in 1948 it would have had to compel Israel to accept a sovereign Palestinian state adjacent to it.
But let's face it the US has stood in the way of that happening.
With Israel the victor in the 1967 war with Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan the West Bank has been under Israeli occupation. Gaza was under Israeli occupation as well until Israel unilaterally withdrew in 2005 supposedly to improve its security and gain international status in light of no peace negotiations with the Palestinians.
Since 1967 Israel has continued to establish Jewish settlements in the West Bank even though they're considered illegal under international law. The US government verbally agrees the settlements are illegal yet does nothing to stop it.
The US gives Israel $3.5 billion dollars each year and in all probability clandestinely helped Israel get nuclear weapons-one of the worst kept secrets in the world.
