This is an Oxfam photo of a mass grave for children in Africa. One in five deaths of children in Africa is caused by malaria.
Of all the amazing contacts and connections that derive from living in this wide world, I have only a few connections in Uganda, a landlocked nation in East Central Africa that is just north and Northwest of Lake Victoria.
Uganda is an emerging nation with a President, Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for 30 years since his participation in the rebellions that toppled Idi Amin and Milton Obote. With the exception of northern Uganda, Museveni has brought stability and economic growth to a country that suffered horribly during many decades of rebel activity and civil war. His Presidency has maintained one of the most effective national responses in Africa to AIDS.
I have been exchanging emails with Ronald Katongole, co-founder of the Dream School and Primary School which works to help children from disadvantaged families and orphans of AIDS.
"For the last three years, we have seen children progressing academically, but, unfortunately, our major threat now is Malaria which severely attacks our children in waves. Malaria causes headache, vomiting, and high temperature a few hours after the initial mosquito bite, and this situation lead to loss of water in the body. When a young victim fails to get the needed treatment, they die in a very short time.
We recently lost a young girl, a sweet young girl, Shivan, one of our beloved students, Thus, we developed the idea of building a clinic as part of our school for early detection and management of malaria cases. When malaria attacks the poor, many guardians use herbal medicine that is not effective compared to much stronger Western Medicines."
Katongole was very direct and stated:
"We need your support to set up a malaria clinic. We are in touch with a doctor and volunteers who will help with the clinic."
