US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announcing US approves sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, 7-13-23
Last Friday President Joe Biden confirmed the US would send cluster bombs to Ukraine.
These weapons are banned by over 100 countries world wide as they pose a hazard to the civilian population long after the conflict is over from unexploded munitions.
This decision also contradicts the earlier administration decision not to supply cluster bombs to Ukraine.
Then yesterday, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan upped the ante when he confirmed, "there will be the transfer of F-16s (to Ukraine], likely from European countries that have excess F-16 supplies". [1]
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responded, "Moscow can't ignore the nuclear capability of US-designed F-16 fighter jets that may be supplied to Ukraine by its Western backers".
"The US and its NATO satellites create the risk of a direct armed confrontation with Russia, and this may lead to catastrophic consequences".
"We have informed the nuclear powers-the US, UK and France-that Russia can't ignore the ability of these aircraft to carry nuclear weapons".
"No assurances [by he West] will help here. In the midst of fighting, the Russian military isn't going to investigate whether any specific jet is equipped to deliver nuclear weapons or not".
The very fact of the appearances of such systems within the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be considered by us as a threat from the West in the nuclear domain."
This move by the US is without a doubt the most serious escalation to the Ukraine conflict.
