Time to Re-Think Columbus Day
We observe Columbus Day October 10th next week. It's not the holiday it once was. Many school's are open. Most non-governmental offices are open. Perhaps the diminished honor is due to recognition of the fact that Columbus and what he accomplished are not things this nation should be honoring.
It's time to stop honoring Christopher Columbus with a national holiday. We've all learned long ago that he did not "discover" America. There were already millions of people living there. He wasn't even the first European to land here. We've also learned of the abuse he and his accomplices meted out on the native people. Many were brought back to Spain as slaves. Disease brought by the Europeans nearly wiped them out. What he did accomplish was the beginning of a massive migration of Europeans because of the prospect of finding gold and therefore wealth.
Let's stop perpetuating this mistake and rename the holiday "Indigenous Peoples Day" in honor of those whose genocide began that fateful day in 1492.
