I'm excited. This pope Francis could change
things.
It'll take a lot. I've long thought the Catholic Church,
through it's leadership and stances, has been one of the most evil
forces on the planet. This new pope could be changing things. It
could be huge. Let's hope he stays alive long enough.
Frank Schaeffer nails it with his article,
Heaven Forefend the Pope Is Sane!,
saying,
The pope just told the American Catholic
religious right to shove off . He said that the political
game they've been playing on behalf of people like the Koch
brothers and Tea Party -- in the name of morality -- threatens, the
moral structure of the Church.
The Pope just told the right wing extremists to cool it. The
logic of what they and people like the folks running First
Things (that labeled the pope a "pacifist" and
denounced him on that score) will make the Church "fall like a
house of cards" if it does not find better balance.
Can you imagine if the Pope told his legions of Cardinals and
Bishops and Priests to tell their flocks that it was evil for the
House republicans to take away food stamps for five million
people.
Can you imagine if Pope Francis sent a message down the
hierarchy that corporations are not persons, that they should
demand that their politicians stop taking campaign money from them,
directly or indirectly, and that the legislators should pass laws
making it clear that corporations are not people.
Imagine. It could, almost overnight, upend American
politics.
Can you imagine if the 45% of Catholics who have voted with
the right wing Bishops dwindled down, in response to the Pope's
change of heart, to 20 percent.
Can you imagine if it happened before November
2014.
Can you imagine if the Pope told, not only the new "converts"
away from right wing politics, but also the ones who voted
Democrat, that almost all of the members of congress were in bed
with the devil, because of their lying in bed with
corporations.
Can you imagine if those Catholics actually turned America
upside down, and even told Obama how he was wrong to be appointing
banksters to all the positions he has.
Just imagine.
