Introduction

War is on everybody's mind these days. We follow developments in Ukraine, Russia, and China with fears of a nuclear Armageddon always lurking in the back of our minds. We hope to keep up with the ever-changing constellation of enemies and allies, while the powers-that-be identify for us which countries are forces for good in the world (we are) and which are forces for evil. The point of this exercise is to stimulate new ways of thinking about war "more right-brain ways, one might say more wholistic perhaps, or more philosophical.

Directions

Please read each quote, mull it over for a bit, and then share your thoughts about it in the comments section. I have deliberately omitted names and citations to enable readers to respond solely to thoughts identified only by number without being influenced by who said them. Names and citations will be provided upon request.

I hope readers will find this exercise useful (or at least entertaining). "- MSR

TWELVE QUOTATIONS

1. "And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the bloodboils with hate and the mind is closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and do it gladly so."

2. "War alone brings up to its highest tension all human energy and puts the stamp of nobility upon the people who have the courage to meet it."
