The seagulls are walking around the yard
like officers of the Coastguard
With their wings behind their backs.
waiting for some formal event to start
In the local hall, all lit up
where there will be speeches and awards
And their strong necks will sweat
under their collars as they are called up to be honored
For representing a tradition that saves people.
Or maybe they are
Just tired of flying or standing on one leg
on roof or rock or of fishing and foraging
And they just want to walk around
before nightfall.
