I rejoice that America has resisted
William Pitt to Parliament, 1766

Sixteen years before the British gave up their war effort in the American colonies, William Pitt and others told King George III that he was absolutely wrong to kill and maim Americans seeking freedom. (Image)

Every day of every year from Pitt's warning in 1766 through the end of the British effort in 1782 was wasted time for the people on each side of the Atlantic.  Lives and opportunities were lost.  The only beneficiaries were the war merchants and the insane monarch, George.  His madness was florid, without any restraint.

A leading newspaper characterized Parliament's action in 1782 to stop funding the war as the end of "an offensive war in America, for the impracticible object of reducing the Colonies to obedience by force."  --

On August 29, 2013, the British people rose up and demanded that their Parliament reject the United States in its latest proposed misadventure and killing spree in Syria.  The war merchants and Prime Minister David Cameron, were stunned and humbled.   "David Cameron suffered a surprise and humiliating Commons defeat on the issue," the press reported.  This was the first rejection of a request for military action by a British Parliament since King George's defeat on funding for the war against the Colonies in 1782.

Then, citizens of the United States made known their resistance in numbers rarely seen opposing a president's military action.  Majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and independents were clear about their objections to military action against the Syrian nation, which has neither attacked nor threatened our country.

The majority coalition is like no other in our recent history.   It includes leftists; Tea Partiers; socialists; Libertarians; traditional conservatives; Catholics;  fundamentalist Christians; the Congressional Black Caucus; and more. The people lack a leader with Pitt's rhetorical skills.  Rather, they people speak through the eloquence of unity.

That eloquence translated into what looked like a nearly certain loss for the Obama war authorization in the House of Representatives.  As the Senate vote approached, it appeared that the president might lose there as well.

Through the good graces of Russia, the president was able to withdraw his request to attack Syria without the profound risk of legislative defeat.  Although we lack  what the British people got, a formal defeat of a war authorization, the reality of what happened is clear.

The people rose up without a leader and absent a media blitz. The people rose up and said no to war.  They said no to a shift of attention away from a failing economy.  Most importantly, the people said no to the war merchants who profit on conflict and suffering.

This is the first time in modern history that presidential military action was stopped before it commenced.

The war merchants and their operatives have no intention of giving up on attacking Syria or any other nation or leader in the way of greater power and profit.  But, they have a new opponent to deal with, an informed public that will not stand by and allow their "public servants" the option of attacking and invading foreign nations at will, wasting the lives and livelihoods of citizens, and lying about it every step of the way.

Continued vigilance and resistance are the best methods of refocusing on our needs at home and repairing our image abroad.

We're past due but just in time.
