Reading Chris Hedges latest, "The Real Enemy Is Within" , who could doubt his perceptiveness when he writes, "Militarists and war profiteers are our greatest enemy. They use fear, bolstered by racism as a tool in their efforts to abolish civil liberties, crush dissent and ultimately extinguish democracy... There will be no genuine democratic, social, economic or political reform until we destroy our permanent war machine."
Hedges buttresses his perceptions citing Sheldon Wolin's, "Inverted Totalitarianism", Rosa Luxemburg, "Bourgeois society faces a dilemma...transition to socialism...or a return to barbarism", Seymour Melman, who wrote of "war profiteers and the military", John Ralston Saul's referring to "a coup d' etat in slow motion" by the corporatists and the military, Brian Waddell, "The requirements of total war", C. Wright Mills "The Power Elite", along with likes of Joseph Conrad, Eduardo Galeano, Arundhati Roy, W.E.B. Du Bois and Noam Chomsky.
All eloquent critical thinking intellectuals writing and speaking of the evils of US empire. Hedges ended his piece saying "there is the virus of fascism wrapped in the American flag, held aloft by the Christian cross and buttressed by white supremacy" and is "a potent and dangerous force within the body politic. And it is growing". The real enemy is within".
The question here-again quoting Hedges, "If you are not dedicated to the destruction of empire and dismantling of American militarism...there will be no genuine democratic, social, economic or political reform until we destroy our permanent war machine"-is how destruction of our permanent war machine is to be done?
That's the conundrum. It isn't that people don't know the evils Hedges speaks of. Many do; it's how to destroy it?
I don't have an answer. But millions are suffering in this country with joblessness, unemployment, foreclosures, indebtedness, savings gone scratching to get by et al, but the suffering is scattered in different parts of the country. The financial and economic calamity of 2008 didn't include all the people and all areas of the country.
Yet a calamity similar to the 1930's great depression that affected most of the people could happen again.
It doesn't take a financial genius to realize the financial "masters of the universe" who created the financial collapse and subsequent great recession in 2008 haven't learned anything primarily because they weren't held accountable.
If they create a far worse financial collapse-which considering the indulgence of their malevolent behavior was not held to account it almost assures even worse behavior-with economic devastation so vast reaching everywhere in the country it could become widespread and be the catalyst for people in desperation, with nothing to lose, to rise up and "destroy the empire bringing about the genuine democratic, social, economic and political reform".
Or that desperation erupting from people with nothing to lose could come from the "Christian fascists and white supremacists wrapping themselves in the American flag" bringing the "barbarism" Rosa Luxemburg feared. For her it was "either a transition to Socialism or a return to barbarism".
Considering most Americans knee jerk reaction to "Socialism"-even though the government's bailouts of the financial industry after the financial meltdown of 2008 was nothing more than state socialism, with the government intentionally avoiding use of the term-with over 300,000,000 million privately owned guns in the country, private militia's operating in various parts of the country itching for a fight with the government, plus hundreds of thousands of military veterans trained in the use of modern weaponry, that's a potpourri closer to bringing "barbarism" than choosing a "transition to Socialism".
One thing seems ominous to this observer, the current domestic "tranquility" is just the "calm before the storm."
