Voter ID Lies Republicans Embrace

Progressives and sane conservatives are seeing the moves by the Trumper GOP as aggressive steps towards fascism and attacks on democracy.

One big step towards fascism is requirement of a voter identification card to vote. Conservatives argue that most nations have voter ID laws. Take a closer look and we find that to become a voter one must provide proof of identity, but once you are registered as a voter you do not necessarily need an ID to go to a polling place and vote. The model Republicans are trying to force upon American voters is far from the reality in the countries they cite.

I did some searching and found that the conservative sites either lie or dissemble in their claims that most nations require voter ID. One way to do it is to claim that countries require voter ID to "register. or cast a ballot." There's a huge difference. Requiring people to make special trips to get an ID just for voting is not common. It is impediment used by fascist Repubicans. Wikipedia has a page on voter identification laws that is helpful.

For starters, in many nations, voting is mandatory and people who do not vote can be fined. Compare that to the US where Republicans are attempting to massively increase the difficulty involved in voting. The fascist Republicans are doing this by drastically reducing the numbers of polling places in areas where people of color live, and by removing the right to vote by mail. They force people in areas that don't vote Republican to wait in very long queues.

A Photo Voter ID card is required in Mexico, but it is mailed, free to all voters, so they don't have to travel or take time to get it. Right wingers just cite the fact that Mexico requires a voter ID-- half a lie.

In many nations, ALL voters are mailed a voting credential or a voter ID so they can vote. Compare that the Republican controlled states, which require people, before the elections to travel long distances just to get a voting ID that is required to be shown at the voting booth.

In many nations, all eligible voters are included in a directory which is checked by voting officials at the polling place.

In many nations people ARE required to show some ID to become registered voters, but they don't have to show a specifically created voter ID card to vote. They are offered many different options on what they have to show, if anything, in order to cast a ballot. And many of those nations allow mail-in voting without the need for an excuse.

So, when a conservative argues that the US is different that other nations, because not all states require voter ID, call them on their bullshit. Get specific and make it clear that mandatory photo voter ID is not the norm in most nations and that many nations WANT people to vote, instead of making if more difficult like US red states.

A vote for Trump is a vote for fascism and support for a pathologically lying fascist psychopath. Not all, but many Trump supporters meet ALL the criteria to be categorized as cult members.
