National Security Agency, Fort Meade, MD.
Whether we're talking about American boots on the ground type wars, proxy wars fought by CIA trained mercenaries, Pentagon paid private contractor mercenaries, JSOC raids by U.S. special ops forces, CIA or military drone strikes and missile attacks and all aligned and connected with the global war on terror, endless war is the ultimate end game plan of the U.S. national security state.
Peace is the last thing wanted and being worked toward by the security state (despite all the official pronounced puffery).
Peace would mean no justification for the unnecessary and bloated trillion dollar defense spending. No it's better to "roil the waters", keep the pot boiling and perpetuate fear in the American people with outsized over the top propaganda laden terror threats. And "security" becomes the over-riding desire of people. So what if we sacrifice personal and civil liberty and privacy in the process while the Constitution lies in tatters.
This national security state didn't need a real adversary that would constitute a legitimate threat, (and besides there weren't any around since the demise of the Soviet Union in 1991). No matter, it just contrived to make "terror" as the threat and made it "appear" as if it were an adversary that must be fought against until it is finally vanquished, (which is never).
So terrorists and terrorism were made into the perfect foil to justify and conduct endless war.
Initially it needed a face, Osama bin Laden but he became superfluous even before his death as other groups took on the "terror" make-up and now every government's "enemy" are called terrorists.
Throw in the NSA's clandestine monitoring of all electronic communications here and abroad, again justified to presumably nab some odd mad bomber, all in the name of "protecting" the people and the free society is just a mirage, a figment of the imagination, but all wrapped in the flag of phony patriotism.
Now it seems at all professional sporting events and some major college football games in America the "troops" are lauded, players uniforms, hats, jersey sleeves and helmets display flag decals and end zones are adorned with stars and stripes. From commentators we can't hear enough of how much "our troops are defending us". As for Kate Smith's rendition of "God Bless America" it's become the staple of baseball's 7 th inning stretch.
