The Super Pac Extravaganza of 2012

At first glance this idea may appear to be perverse, but let the big donors to Super Pacs give as much as they want in this granddaddy of all presidential money sweepstakes that goes to the highest bidder (ah funder).

In the past most people "believed" that our elections were tainted, bought and paid for by the richest of the rich, but the "evidence" was sort of hidden. For example when John Kerry was running for president in 2004, we knew there was big money behind the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" ads against him but it was unclear at the time who was the big funder behind the scurrilous attacks on Kerry. Now of course we know it was Houston homebuilder and Republican supporter Bob Perry, the main funder of the "Swift Boat" campaign. He's now openly a big funder to Mitt Romney's Super Pac "Restore Our Future".

But the "Swift Boat" attacks and their funding should be considered from the dark ages of political funding when there was a semblance of campaign finance regulation that somewhat curtailed the more outrageous funding of campaigns. That was then, before SCOTUS ruling on "Citizens United" essentially obliterated a century's worth of regulations on campaign contributions and brought the Super Pacs unabashedly into the arena.

In this brave new world of no holds barred unlimited campaign underwriting there was no need for billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson to hide he and his wife donating $5 million each to Newt Gingrich's Super Pac "Winning Our Future". It was all out in the open, publicized and perfectly legal. Adelson later made it known if Gingrich's campaign should flag, he'd contribute even more money to Romney's campaign (or presumably whoever was the Republican nominee opposing Obama next November). Why not $100 million; there's no rules against it!

And that's just the point. Maybe this campaign funding has to reach a level of such outrageous preposterousness for the American people to finally say enough and demand that our elections are not contests that go to the highest bidder and that "Citizens United" must be overturned.

To this observer, it would seem unimaginable for this "legalized" corruption of the electoral process to continue. "Citizens" was the smoking gun that has completely corrupted it.

Lastly, let's not forget it's not just the Republicans accepting the Super Pac largesse bonanza; it's also Barack Obama and his "Priorities USA" Super Pac as well as those for Congressional Democrats.

The Super Pacs are the "Boss Tweed's" of our era.
