The Struggle and Danger of Speaking to Power

In all societies most citizens have a choice. The individual can opt for the status quo and seek to make good on its promises. Or, he can think for himself and follow the dictates of his conscience.

Irshad Manji was born in Pakistan and migrated to Canada at the age of 14. She has flowered in her newfound freedom and she intends to bring this wealth back to her native land.

Often, she has received death threats for her efforts. A traditional Muslim, a feminist and a human rights advocate, what did she do to merit an hour interview on the Glenn Beck Show? One answer, Manji denounced all Arab involvement with the 9/11 tragedy.

As you view the videos, you will see the common bonds between Manji and Beck. Both speak to power in no uncertain terms. Both face assassination for their outspokenness. Glenn Beck admires her for facing her death unequivocally.

Manji Rebels Against Authoritarianism Not Authority

When moderate Arabs deal with terrorism, they claim it has nothing to do with Islam. Thus, they let the terrorists define Islam to their aims and preferences. Much like ordinary Americans, they are uncomfortable when called upon to defy authorities. This leads to authoritarianism.

An Epiphany for the Great Deceiver

This is a repeat of the second video that can be repeated for benefit. Facing death at the age of ten, Irshad realized how she conducted her life was up to her.

Islam Embraces All Forms of Humanism

For political reasons at the end of the twelfth century the leaders turned their backs on justice, openness and inquiry. They began to rule through fear mongering and ignorance. Glenn Beck posits this is as the basis for slavery. He recognizes this is also true of the 21st century.

There is a Non-violent Tension Necessary for Growth à ‚¬" MLK

The moderate Arabs denounce Irshad as anti-Muslim for denouncing 9/11. Aren't Muslims entitled to denounce GWB for his heavy-handed War on terror? The NOW organization is afraid to criticize the subjugation of Arab women for fear of being called racist. Many citizens call Glenn Beck a racist for opposing terrorism. Martin Luther King advocated non-violent dissent and discussion as means to advance social justice and progress.

Living Behind Bulletproof Glass

Beck asked. "Are you prepared for assassination?"

Manji answered, "Yes."

She counters death threats from her audience. Aren't they afraid of making me a martyr? The murder of Dr. Martin Luther King did not kill his ministry. Others continued his work after his death.

Note: A death threat means others are taking the writer seriously.

In Iraq Both Neocons and Leftists Sacrificed Human Rights for Political Expediency

Sadam Hussein ran the most repressive regime in the world. If the USA had invaded in the name of freedom of religion and speech, there would have been no objection. If they had carried through with universal human rights, they would have been applauded by historians.

Muslims Who Support the Reform Movement

Since the reader has reached this point, I assume he agrees the words of Irshad Manji and Glenn Beck have some merit. We must attend to other viewpoints, as our own haven't been fruitful.
