Did you see this?

It's a video of the mob group of neo-catholic boys from a private neo-catholic high school in Kentucky who went to the steps of the nation's capital and ended up taunting harassing trying to hang out with a bunch of old guys dressed up like Native Americans. Too bad the old guys weren't in the mood. They just kept banging drums and hollering stuff. (Okay, they were Native Americans. Get over it.)

"Build the wall! Build the wall! Build the wall!"

Check out that good-looking young man in the front, proudly wearing his red MAGA hat, grinning like Moses parting the Dead Sea, staking out his ground inside the ground that's already been staked out by the old guy with the drum. What's the problem? Look how intently the young man follows the beat. The silent stare, the rigid face, resentful, flush with sympathetic scorn. This is a kid who already excels in smug self-righteousness, and at such a young age, a position he's been taught to recite in Latin, the simulacra of the smirk lurking beneath an impudent smile.

Before you judge, watch the video. Turn off the talking heads and the spiritual advisors. Turn off the lenders and benders and the knee-jerk defenders. (It rhymes, I know.) Watch the video for yourself and then decide. Who could not see the humor in the boys' harmless game of "Move or We'll Violate Your Space"? Or the wholesome, good-natured fun in a friendly singing competition? Who but a few losers and takers, that's who! Sad! Watch the video. I dare you to say it didn't tickle your funny bone. Because what's not funny about a frenzied group of young white kids berating an elderly Native American healer with threatening right-wing slogans? "Build the wall! Build the wall! Build the wall!" Watch the video.

What you see in this fresh-faced, Trump-loving young man is the inevitable product of a decades-long shift the Catholic church has undergone in moving away from its historical roots in social justice ("love thy neighbor") and into its philosophical and ideological opposite, a postmodern or "neo-catholicism." Make no mistake. What the young man is doing in the video is exactly what he has been taught to do: don't just talk about the cosmic struggle between Good and Evil passed down by your spiritual forefathers. Live the struggle. Put the values you have been taught to believe in to the test. And this is what he did.

Check out that grin. How proud would you be if this were your kid? Yeah, I know. The sky's the limit.

Let me be perfectly clear: if I ever have sons, I want them raised as neo-catholics.

I want my son to be just like the kid in the video. Sunny, smarmy, privileged, uncouth, aggressive. abusive. Someone whose life is taken care of and whose needs are met, whose clothes are cleaned and pressed, whose food is prepared, whose room is cleaned. Someone who looks no further than the end of his nose to see the world reflected in his own image. Someone who has been taught to believe that sympathy and kindness and compassion are signs of weakness. A true believer. A bright-eyed torch bearer in the march against rational thought. Like the kid in the video, I want my son to have what it takes to insult anyone not like him, and then, when captured on video insulting someone, I want my son to have the strength of character to deny what happened, make excuses for himself and find ways to blame others for what he did. Neo-catholicism is the discourse of the day. I want my son to have faith in the superiority of his faith.

And when my son grows up, I expect him to embrace fully the values embraced by other well-known leaders of the movement, like former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, who repeatedly lied about the effect his tax cuts would have on the poor; or former New Jersey governor, Chris Christie (aka Fat Boy Fat), who insulted the pope (the pope!) while defending right-wing extremists; or Paul LePage, former governor of Maine, who refused to provide health care for 70,000 low-income residents; or Sam Alito, current Supreme Court Justice who publicly accused the president of lying about the political effects of Citizens United. (Fact check: it was Alito who lied.). These men are loyal practitioners of "neo-catholicism," public servants dedicated to implementing policies that reflect the true nature of Christ's teachings. Such as:

Do unto others before they do unto you. Aid and abet the ruling elites: you never know when you might need a friend. Give thanks for eternal war, that it should ever keep the rabble cowering in pews. Praise the thief, the cheat and the criminal, for they are the bounty of the earth. Bless mass murder, mass bombings and mass incarceration, for they are avatars of peace. Take from the poor and give to the rich. Cheat homeowners, ignore climate change, and poison drinking water everywhere. Above all else, demonize the poor, the aged and the infirm, for they will inherit nothing but the whirlwind anyway, nor will they enter the golden palace glittering in the sky beyond all imagination, a fantasy concocted for fools.

In a word, neo-catholics reject outright the "good news" of the New Testament in favor of Iron Age traditions that emphasize cruelty, hatred, violence, greed and war. Because that's what Jesus would do.

(Hey, Father Franky, you vicious little culture warrior! Good thing you don't have a vagina! Hi there, Antonin. Bet you're hoping like hell god ain't gay! What's that, little Timmy Dolan? Don't even think about casting out those demons! And no, we haven't forgotten about you, either, Bernie Law. May that malicious god of your own making receive you in the same spirit in which you received the children of Boston.)

And speaking of growing up neo-catholic, doesn't that kid in the video with the smirk and the red MAGA hat look a lot like a pimple-faced version of Brett Kavanaugh, the "I like Beer" jurist who recently slithered his way onto the Supreme Court? Talk about a blueprint for the proper upbringing! It's as if these two spent their entire academic lives locked up in private, neo-catholic institutions, where science, history and math were discarded in favor of "boofing," "ralphing" and the "Devil's Triangle." Wild, unsupervised parties on weekends. Collaring women, getting them drunk, locking them in a room, forcibly holding them down, physically assaulting them - and then giggling like Gummo when one of them escapes. (One of "them" will testify under oath she felt like she was going to be killed.) These are Reagan-era manifestations of white male neo-catholic privilege.

Actually, yes, I would want my son to be just like that kid in the video. He showed incredible restraint and wisdom beyond his years in how he responded to the non-reported fight between the Native Americans and the Black Hebrew Israelites.

The boys were simply innocent bystanders. The fault lies primarily with the BHI, and secondarily with the nonsensical behavior of Nathan Phillips, who has misrepresented what happened all over the place.

an important point is that "Sandmann's family hired a PR firm to help, the Courier-Journal reported.". Just think how the world would be different if everyone could hire a PR firm before making a statement.

Reason: (Inappropriate Content) Personal attacks

...Except everything you're describing didn't happen.

This story has been thoroughly exposed, and the truth is out. There's no excuse for continuing to push the MSM's careless and harmful propaganda version.

The boy and the Omaha have both spoken to the public, along with countless others who were there, and a more complete video has been released, showing what a shameless and inexcusable piece of "journalism" the original releases were.

Get your facts straight before republishing harmful garbage like this. It's bad enough we can't expect due diligence from the media anymore, who actually called for these kids to be doxxed or even burned alive.

Some of these kids are now in fear of their lives, thanks to a trigger-happy vigilante social media. The adults should be showing more wisdom.

Someone needs to explain where the "personal attacks" are in the previous comment. I swear this site is being overtaken by faux-left reactionaries. You call out the propaganda, someone flags it.

Telling that the author, presumably, or whomever, resorted to 'flagging', rather than responding substantively to the very legitimate pushback against the false framing of this issue many here have pointed out.

Yet another in a burst of trash from the media establishment.

The slippery slope to constructive fascism beings with the globalist duopoly feeding lies that seem plausible in the absence of context. Then it plays our emotions like a banjo anytime those lies are threatened with truth or logic. Using this format of political correctness gone haywire, the duopoly will turn this country sooner rather than later into a Brave New World with gulags for banished independent thinkers. And it will not be by the hand of one-off freaks like Trump, as it would like you to believe.

As I said in an earlier comment: The picture speaks volumes.

I am not talking about what actually happened at this particular incident. To me that is immaterial and gossip. I am talking from a historical point of view, and the imagery.

For those that are like most US Americans, they know next to nothing about the real history of the confrontation between European colonial settlers and the Indigenous People who lived for thousands of years, what is now called the American continent.

The Europeans were invaders, for that is what they were, and btw justifying their invasion by the Catholic Church's teaching of the Right of Discovery.

Just as this young innocent looking kid with the MAGA confronts the Indigenous Person, so too did the Europeans with their foreign ideas about property ownership.

When the Europeans first landed they did not find a wilderness, nor savages. They actually confronted a civilization of many nations that at the time were more advanced than Europe. They found farms, villages, cities, groomed pasture land for free range animals.

In their thirst for "free land" the settlers kept cleansing the Indigenous People. George Washington was the richest man in the US, for example. He was a slaver, Indian killer and real estate crook. He was no humble surveyor, he stole land he did not own and sold it to plantations and speculators.

The Indian Wars and ethnic cleansing, conquering one nation after another continued up until the early 20th century. It is still going on, as the US (and Canadian) government continue their habit of breaking treaties, and stealing more land.

That is some of what this picture speaks to me. The arrogant confrontation of white Europeans against an ancient Indigenous People both standing on public land, neither willing to move.

If this picture were living history the kid would kill the Indian in cold blood, scalp him for the government bounty and put up a fence.

No the hat says it all. These kids don't even known when or what "America" was when it was "great". They don't teach US history in school and what they do teach is 90% mythology---just like "when America was great".

I'll bet you can't say when America was great either!

David William, I think it likely that the kid was wearing the hat at least partly because he came to Washington to support an anti-abortion rally and was happy and proud that the President supports his position, and perhaps the kid supports other Republican positions,as well. I find comparing the 13 or 14 year old kid in the background of this, to you, iconic photo to a braying donkey a bit unfair and just a bit offensive. If you were to watch the longer videos you might notice that the kids were not being aggressive, disrespectful, or unfriendly -- they were just having a good time, first listening to the hour of ranting by the "Black Hebrew Israelites" and then variously enthusiastic for the drumming noise while puzzled why the old (to them) Indian guy was drumming in their friend's face. For what it's worth, the "Indigenous Person" was the one doing the "confronting" and obviously (from the video records) lied about it later, saying on different occasions that the boys surrounded him and then saying that he was trying to create peace where a mob of boys was close to attacking four black men.

If you think the photo makes a good symbol of indigenous repression by colonialists, fine; but you should realize that that's not what happened here.

Sure the image may be important, in a different context than it was taken. But, the real important thing about the image was the lessons that should've been learned from the real context.

The qualities you describe in the picture are those PERCEIVED by you. It's that window of perception that can also be a problem, when "sold" to others.

Also important was the fact that the picture was a "cropped" sample of a bigger scene.

While you may not be talking about the reality behind the image, you're still putting perceptions out there and highlighting them as being "historical symbols". Yet, each person looking at the picture will perceive different "symbolism".

People basically see what they want to see here. Some see a "smug, privileged white brat trying to intimidate the Omaha Elder", while others see a "nervous teen trying to decipher what's going on around him". Some see a "disenfranchised native standing his ground", while others see an Elder trying to engage the youth, while still others see "an old Indian veteran trying to make trouble".

I guess what I'm saying is that without some form of agreed context, symbolism might just be a hard sell from such an image. YMMV.

We are talking about different things. Apparently your comment is that the media distorted this incident.

My comment is that this could be a painting. One could not have staged a better artistic picture. It is historical art---and yes everybody looks at art and sees different things. That is what makes for great art.

As for the mainstream media, this incident is exactly why I spend very little time with TV or print mainstream media---less than 15 minutes a day. They like to run stories like this as a diversion from the really important issues such as the millions of people that the US is killing with its wars, economic sanctions, coups. Or the thousands of people who die every year in the US for lack of healthcare.

This story is just crapola as far as I am concerned. It is the picture, as I said in the second paragraph.

Once a pedant always a pedant: John Re's commentary is trenchant albeit in the higher altitudes of language use. I got lost in BK Faunce's Byzantine maze; are we still on Covington-rush-to-judgement-reversed-by-evidence in sight and sound? Clearly not. And what to do with with David William Pear, the discovery of the New World, Europeans, aboriginal cultures and thereby knit a pattern that looks like Catholic boys, black Israelites, MAGA ball caps and the rather straight-forward litany of events at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial?

My reaction to the initial story was instantly strong and deeply negative. I was appalled by what looked like an orgy of bullying. Accordingly, I wrote to the Archbishop of Louisville and to Covington Catholic HS. Yesterday, I posted a retraction laced with chagrin and shame to the same addresses.

No, I get where you're going with this, trust me.

I know you're not trying to touch the media fiasco on this. I was actually trying to give an honest opinion on your "symbolism" idea. (Read it again, you might see it differently knowing what I just said.)

The short version is, in order for symbolism to work, I think the image has to be somewhat static and/or universally straightforward, not something that is subject to individual perception. That's my take, for what it's worth.

The sad truth is that Americans continue to be divided against one another by an enemy of America and all of her people, and if we, as Americans don't wake up we will destroy ourselves and fulfill the wishes of truly dreadful forces.

"Because what's not funny about a frenzied group of young white kids berating an elderly Native American healer with threatening right-wing slogans? "Build the wall! Build the wall! Build the wall!" Watch the video."

I watched "the video", presumably the one you linked to at the beginning of your piece, but I didn't hear or see anyone berating anyone, nor anyone chanting "build the wall".

The phrase is spoken, however not by the Covington boys. It can be heard at an earlier point in time being yelled mockingly by one of the 'Black Hebrew Israelites.'

The real and truly unfunny "frenzied group" is the BHIs. Search Youtube for "Covington Kids & Indian Confrontation full video uncut" for the full context of this entire episode. (warning-foul and offensive language) It's nearly 2 hours long, and I'm not sure how long the content police at Youtube will allow it to remain.

It's rude to get in someone's face and mouth anything, especially while beating on something.

Thanks to the readers who took the time to respond to a recent article posted on the OpEd opinion page ("The Neo-Catholic Sons of Brett Kavanaugh").

My position is unchanged: patriarchy, of the white male kind, remains a cancer on the American body politic; neo-catholicism is a religious manifestation of this cancer, grounded as it is in Old Testament concepts of violence, revenge, misogyny, genocide and war; evidence of this manifestation is easily documented in the legislative records of influential neo-catholic politicians, such Paul Ryan, Nikki Haley, Steve King and Virginia Foxx, as well as in the actions of the Catholic church itself. (Exhibit A: in spite of enabling and then covering-up the systemic child abuse in his Boston diocese, Cardinal Bernard Law was warmly received by the Vatican, where he was promoted to archpriest of the Basilica of the Santa Maria Maggiore by none other than John Paul II himself. No doubt the pope was thankful for the Cardinal's efforts.) The angry mob of white male neo-catholics who harassed the elder is a modern incarnation of this tradition.

For further reading:

" . . . the teens surround Phillips, start hopping, chanting, chopping hands, laughing. By 1:13:00 [in the video] there is a very large crowd of teens surrounding Phillips; they are openly mocking him. There's nothing respectful about it . . . " (Jodi Jacobson).

"But most of all, thank you for reminding America that there is one untouchable, unassailable thing in this country white boys. And whether it's Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump or a bushel of high school Klansmen-in-training, if anyone ever makes the mistake of blaming them for their black-hearted hate, they will be forced to apologize" (Michael Harriot).

"A group of white teenage boys donned their MAGA hats which are overt and intentional symbols of bigotry, racism and ignorance attended a right-wing Christian rally aimed at denying women their reproductive rights, then happened upon a group of "Black Israelite" cartoon bigots, and in retaliation decided to harass and insult a Native American. They did so because white privilege had trained them from birth that they would likely be able to act in such a way without consequences" (Chauncey Devega).

"Check out that good-looking young man in the front, proudly wearing his red MAGA hat, grinning like Moses parting the Dead Sea, staking out his ground inside the ground that's already been staked out by the old guy with the drum. What's the problem? Look how intently the young man follows the beat. The silent stare, the rigid face, resentful, flush with sympathetic scorn. This is a kid who already excels in smug self-righteousness, and at such a young age, a position he's been taught to recite in Latin, the simulacra of the smirk lurking beneath an impudent smile." -- bkf

"He did not know how long she had been looking at him, but perhaps for as much as five minutes, and it was possible that his features had not been perfectly under control. It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourselfanything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offence. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called." -- "1984" by George Orwell, Part 1, Chapter 5

I don't know what "neo-Catholic" means, but you seem to have a prejudice against the faith and its followers. Is Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (a Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus) a neo-Catholic in your opinion? Is a Jewish person with conservative values a "neo-Jew" in your opinion? Every time you make a broad statement about what you perceive as a majority group (Catholics are actually a minority group that face discrimination, which is accepted by PC-CULTURE for some reason), please replace the group name with a minority group name and ask yourself if it's still okay to make such a statement.
