The Mainstream Media Vs. The Independent Media

I haven't watched the news on TV for quite some time now, cable or otherwise. It's not that they don't do a better job than the anti-msm media. In general, they actually do. The fact is that it's much more thorough and intelligent. I think their neo-liberal bias and perspective is so well established at this point it just goes without saying, and one eventually learns to keep that in mind and get out of it what one can, which, again, is usually a great deal more than one can do so from the "finger-pointing-anti-anything mainstream" crowd.

Frank Bruni and Charles Blow of the NY Times are several head & shoulders above anything the the rebel/rebels have produced (with the possible exception now of Charles Eisenstein). As for Rachel Maddow, as one-dimensional as her commentary generally is (and who btw doesn't even own a TV), her consistent, once-in-a-generation brilliance is that one, full dimension more than what the screamers generally bring to the table. Although, don't get me wrong, one does need the FPAAMCs (Fingerpointing-Anti-Anything-Mainstream-Crowd) to sometimes fill in the considerable holes in the msm coverage.

Unfortunately, the truly biased and undiscriminating will just accept anything the supposedly "independent media" says, as long as it (of course) supports their own bias and perspectives, without benefit of anything resembling reasoned analysis. Which leaves the serious news consumer to do more scrambling than the average I-do-have-a-life-you-know person can reasonably be expected to do.

So, what admittedly little I know of the protests, following the killing of George Floyd by four Minneapolis police officers, I got from skimming mostly msm Internet media sites.

Initially, like everyone else, I was stunned by the extent and spread of the violence. After all, how many times had this happened before? But there had never been a reaction like this, even when the demonstration had gone"national" as in the Ferguson protests. But there was apparently something about the nature of the in-your-face/bankrupt-of-anything-remotely-human or civilized in this no excuses, torture and murder, of George Floyd, that was unbearable for many in this country, and not just the Afro-American population.

I didn't know where this would go. Perhaps this really was "the last straw", and between the virus decimating mostly black communities, with already absurdly high unemployment rates and poverty due to generations of systemic racism; perhaps they had finally snapped and decided "We're done waiting."

But the violence gradually morphed into "peaceful demonstrations". The kind we in white America are, quite frankly, the most comfortable with: No threat, but also no possibility of any meaningful change. The protests, once again, fell into line with all of those that had preceded them. And, once again, within about 48 hours of their being over, the msm will go on to the next sensational, all-important, history-making crisis du jour, that will sell enough frosted flakes to justify their existence (in the minds of their shareholders).

Perhaps I am being overly cynical, but has any police precinct in the country announced its intention to initiate screenings for sociopathic, racists cops? Has there been any mention, at all, in the media, whatsoever, that we had a black president in the White House for eight years, who did absolutely nothing for black people?

And, for me, what was even a little Twilight Zonie about this particular protest was the virtual absence of leaders, in the Black Lives Matter movement. In the 60s it was all about the leaders: Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Andrew Young, Eldridge Cleaver and Harry Belafonte & Sidney Poiter and on and on. Sometimes it even seemed to the exclusion of the actual cause.

So, where is Denzel Washington or Halle Berry? Kanye West is donating $2 million. Okay, nice... I guess. Perhaps Cornel West has had a lot to say about it all, and the msm just doesn't think he sells enough toilet seats. Or maybe Ta-Nehisi Paul Coates is just in the middle of negotiating his next book contract... I found it all, really most bewildering.

It has been high grade Reality TV, with even enough "social content" to satisfy the most disturbed conscience of the average coach potato.

And, now... on to the next news cycle.

Switch the channel, or let's see what's hot on Netflix.

Fini. (Well, oh, until next time.)
