The Hillary Matter: It Is All Part of the Same Spititual Struggle in America Today

I intuit that Obama's ongoing problems with Hillary are an extension of the overall struggle in America today between good and evil. Maybe this is not true, but it is at least possible that it is true. And it is at least important to recognize that --at the deep layers of history-- this is the KIND of thing that operates in the dynamics of human affairs.

The Clintons have shown themselves to be the carriers of a disease, just as one who is bitten by a rapid dog becomes the carrier of that disease. According to my intuitive hypothesis, the brokenness which the Clintons continue to manifest --has there ever been a second-place finisher who has continued to work to undermine the victor as flagrantly as Hillary did last night?-- is in important ways because they bear the imprint of the Bushite forces.

The Clintons were the first major victims of this dark Bushite drive for unlimited power. These Bushite forces announced their radical assault on the legitimate American political system when they showed their unwillingness to acquiesce in the fact that the other political party occupied the White House and, in defiance of the good sportsmanship that had been the way of politics in America, launched a relentless assault on the sitting president. With right wing talk radio, and Whitewater, and Kenneth Starr, and Monica Lewinsky, and a bogus impeachment process, these forces showed their unprincipled and insatiable power lust.

The CLintons were traumatized by this relentless assault. And these wounds have proved to be a vampirish bite, leading to the internalization of that dark and broken Bushite spirit.

It is the transmission of that disease that's on display in this graceless and unprincipled refusal to come together behind Obama, as Hillary's supposedly liberal values would dictate she do.

The problem, of course, is that it is not those values that are running her show. It is the wanton, power-lusting Bushite spirit that has been running the basic choices of the Clinton campaign.

And if all that is true, then indeed this attempt to continue to weaken Obama should be understood as just one of the many ways that the evil spirit that has underlain this whole lying and bullying and hypocritical and destructive and arrogant and insatiable Bushite thrust for power will work to maintain its dominance of this nation's spirit and destiny.

(For my naturalistic perspective on how such an "evil spirit" operates in human affairs, see my "Concept of Evil," at

The dynamics of such evil patterns is that nothing restrains their quest for power. The spirit that has brought America to the brink of fascism needs to stop Obama, to weaken him, to prevent him from reorganizing our sick political system and summoning up the better angels of America.

This is war. And there will likely be no end to it. If he is elected and serves eight years, the time likely will never come when this spirit will leave him be. If Obama is successful, he might in eight years drive it underground. BUt it is a permanent part of the American cultural system, and it will lurk there always.

So, according to this perspective on all this, the battle with Hillary is not a side-show. It is part of a larger war. It is one of the battles. And the battle with John McCain in the fall will also be but one of the battles. If Obama is elected and endeavors to achieve his goals as president, he will be compelled continually to go up against the forces of darkness.

In this sense, the "problem" that Hillary is continuing to choose to make herself is but one more challenge and one more opportunity for Obama to lead the nation. At this turn, and in all the future battles, he will be able to triumph only by utilizing completely different language and myth and drama and mapping than those used by the forces coming against him.

It is that difference that makes each battle an opportunity: it affords the means to display what is the spirit that animates him, and how it differs from the spirit that animates his adversaries.

It affords the American people, moreover, another kind of important opportunity: having acquiesced in the triumph of darkness through the Bushite regime, having mistaken the evil for the good, the American people now have a chance to redeem themselves and see this choice between Obama and the darkness arrayed against him for what it really is.

The battle that Obama is waging, and is going to have to wage, is therefore fundamentally a spiritual battle. His weapons are his words and his actions, and his challenge is to so craft them as to summon forth the better angels of the American people.

And at stake in this battle is the soul of America.
