The Help is on Netflix now. It reminds us how, in the 1960's, certainly in the South, racist thinking and racist treatment of blacks was the norm.
It shows how well-to-do southern women required their black maids to only use a blacks-only bathroom, how one maid is fired when she uses the family bathroom when there's a death causing tornado howling outside, where the black bathroom is.
It shows how the law does not allow black students' school books to be used by white students.
It shows white employers giving commands to their maids, without the most basic, decent courtesy.
It shows ignorant, despicable racist white women, disgusting, vapid, vain, profoundly ugly inside, but proud and haughty. We still see those ugly women, at MAGA rallies, at anti lockdown protests with their small penis big-gun-toting men.
An hour and twenty minutes into the movie there's a scene where a busdriver kicks all the blacks off the bus because "Some n*gger got himself killed." It was the murder of Medgar Evers.
Again and again in this movie you see women of status and power treating black maids horribly, often because they want to maintain appearances with even more despicable white racist women. And I believe that there are still police and still white women, certainly mostly Trump supporters, who still think that way.
Of course not all white people are that way. 43% of whites voted for Obama.
But they are out there, and some of them are cops that kill black men because they are black.
I don't put up with racist remarks when they are made in my presence. Watching The Help will increase my resolution. Thank god so many people of all races, mostly young, are out, facing the risks of Covid19 protesting.
