The Future of Israel

In view of the great efforts being expended by Secretary of State John Kerry and the United States government to forge a peaceful settlement to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict through the creation of an independent Palestinian state, it is timely to examine the long term prospects for such a settlement and its impact on prospects for the State of Israel itself.

Israel was created in 1947, with indispensable help from the United States and without significant Arab input, through a UN resolution, that partitioned the land of Palestine between the Arabs and Jews. Zeeve Jabotinsky, the ideological father of many Zionists correctly predicted that "Israel's fate is to be perpetually at war. It needs to be created behind an impregnable Iron Wall of military force'. As everyone can easily see, his prediction has come true. The Jewish claim of historical home in Palestine is mostly without merit. The majority of world Jews (the Ashkenazi's) or their ancestors never set foot in Palestine. The birth of Israel, resulted in the killing or expulsion of many of the original inhabitants of the land, to put it mildly, to create room for the present-day Jewish state.

While Israel is certainly more democratic that the states that surround it, it needs major repair as a proper democracy, particularly when it relates to its Arab and other minorities. The conditions under which Israel was born are changing so significantly that the future of Israel itself as a Jewish state in the Middle East is growing more untenable for the following reasons:

1.    Although bedeviled by constant crises and unexpected turns, the Arab spring, demonstrated that the Arabs are finally shaking-free from years of slavery and subjugation and are slowly becoming masters of their own fate. That cannot be good for Israel. The surrounding Arabs share feelings of hate and disgust at the Jewish state.

2.    Although the Israeli Arabs represent only about 20% of the Israeli population, they represent a time bomb sure to destroy the Jewish nature of Israel. They are behind the loud cries heard around the world of "Apartheid Israel".

3.    The original supporters of Israel, in particular the United States, now have many problems of their own to worry about. For many reasons, the United States may be losing some of its leadership position in the world and has to concentrate more on what is happening in the Far East. Poll data show that the majority of Americans today feels that the United States is not responsible for resolving the conflict between Israel and other countries in the Middle East.

4.    The Israeli qualitative military and technological superiority in the region is being challenged. Iran just launched another monkey into space and is on the verge of acquiring a nuclear weapons capability.

5.    Despite appearances to the contrary, there is increased unity and coordination among Israel's enemies. When it comes to Israel, there are no differences between the Arab and Moslem countries. They all share the same objective: the annihilation of the Jewish state in their midst.

6.    Constant fear of annihilation is causing significant outward emigration of the Israelis, to safer heavens. This is especially true for well-trained, highly educated Israelis who can easily find jobs in less threatening environments.

7.    Disgust and revulsion at Israel's treatment of the Palestinians are causing many calls for boycotts of Israel, its institutions and its products throughout the world.

8.    Israel, and Zionism in general, is driving a significant increase in anti-Semitism around the world. Sympathetic feelings towards the Jews as a result of the Holocaust are being eroded and are now being replaced by flagrant anti-Semitism. The rising Moslem population in Western countries is amplifying this as well.

9.    There are growing problems among Jews both within and outside of Israel. Muted feelings towards religion in general and among Jews in particular are reducing Jewish commitment to the support and protection of the state of Israel. This is particularly true among younger Jews. Some Jews are even strongly anti-Zionist and anti-Israel.

10.   The two-state solution is of no value to the future of Israel. It is, at best, a stopgap measure that will have no enduring effect. The dream of a Jewish state among the Arab States, even with an independent Palestine is just that: a dream.

Ultimately, Israel will be just like those states created by the Christian Crusades. They all started strong militarily as well. What remains from those states now are the Christians of Lebanon who are slowly receding from the annals of history. Many Lebanese Christians are emigrating to safer heavens in Europe or America. The Christians in Lebanon are now a minority even in Lebanon itself and are not nearly as influential as they once were.
