The Cosmic Story: Taurus New Moon, May 6, 2016

Grounding Into Our Earth

May is the time to ground in Aries fire. Taurus takes all that new energy and gives it a form that aligns with its purpose. If it's anything like May in New England, it's the energy of new green grass, delicate spring green leaves and lilacs sweetening the air. Taurus, the builder, gives each form its specific beauty. It's up to us to see that beauty and honor it.

Taurus is the sign where we as energy beings incarnate into the material world. There's a freshness and innocence to Taurus that belies the myth that Taurus is only concerned with possessions, money and fertility. In truth (and with Saturn retrograde in Sagittarius we are called to look at the truth beneath the surface), Taurus is concerned with values and our self-worth, our talents and our enjoyment of the sensual world. When we listen to our body's response to life, when we allow our senses to inform us, when we see that beauty is all around us, we are using our Taurus skills--which we all have.

Of all the signs of the Zodiac, Taurus is the sign that represents Mother Earth. It is aligned with Nature at her most open and fertile. Like the Empress in the Tarot, Taurus is wild nature, our wild nature, which is more aligned with the Earth than with the Heavens. There is an innate fertility in Taurus that urges us to plant a seed, any seed and watch it grow. This is the time to plant here in New England, although I've learned that the desert has its own seasons as I'm sure other landscapes do as well.

We celebrate the Celtic cross-quarter festival of Beltane now -- from May 1-6th. This is the time when the veils are thin between dimensions and new life, as well as the Faeries, come through to play in nature (the other time the veils thin is across the year on Halloween/Samhain, when the veils open to welcome the dead). Life herself arises out of the dark and death of Winter and now takes on her guise as the Flower Maiden--young life in full bloom. The Maiden Earth puts on her own robe of glory to match that of our individual glory that we reclaimed in Aries.

This year, step into this new cycle of life fully aligned with your Spirit. Mother Nature is calling us to be her stewards and her envoys in the world. We represent Her needs, which are our truest needs. We don't need more things, especially when manufacturing them has devastated Nature and poisoned the world. Instead, we need to listen to Nature/our natures and remember=Mercury retrograde how to live the life we incarnated on Earth to experience.

Taurus asks us, What do we really value? What is of value to us all? An exercise I use with my clients is this: Draw a target with a bullseye (another symbol for Taurus as the 3rd Eye). Now in the circles, put in words that you value. In the bull's eye, put what you value the most. And in each of the outer circles, put down what you value as next most important. And so on. Once you know those things that are most important to you, always aim your goals towards that bull's eye or at least the inner circles. Only spend your energies on what you love. That's the Taurus mantra.

Since Taurus is the sign of Mother Earth, I feel we need to re-member our Mother the Earth. I think we don't tell our creation stories often enough. Those stories are about our origins, where the Earth herself is created and creating. These creation myths are like the very personal stories our parents tell about our own individual births. Why not honor the Earth by remembering her Birth story? These stories remind us of the powerful gift of life here on Earth.

So let me tell you a few stories about Mother Earth's origins.

One account of the creation of the world from ancient Greece was that 'first there was Chaos and out of chaos arose 'broad-bossomed Earth', Gaia who gave birth to the Sky above who was Ouranos. They mated and when Gaia gave birth to various monstrous beings, Ouranos was horrified and pushed them back into Mother Earth's womb. After awhile, Gaia had had enough. So she asked her children who would help her stop their father, and Chronos/Saturn agreed to help. That night when Ouranos came down to Earth to make love with her, Saturn tool a scythe and cut off his father's phallus (his creative energy) and threw it into the ocean. After that, Heaven stopped coming to make love with Mother Earth!

And his phallus? Where it fell into the Ocean's womb, the Goddess of Love, Sex, Beauty and Wisdom--Aphrodite--arose in the sea foam and came to shore. The last gift of the heavens to us is Love.

This ancient story of creation tells us a truth we might not feel comfortable with. Before something new can arise, we need to let the old story revert back to chaos. Only then can a new creation arise. Out of chaos comes new life.
