Taurus New Moon, April 21, 2012

"Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.

This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself."

Just in time to celebrate Earth Day, the Taurus New Moon arrives on Saturday, April 21 at 12:18 am PDT/ 3:18am EDT/ 7:18am GMT.   This Taurus New Moon evokes the Goddess of the Earth, our home.   This New Moon energy calls forth the new King who belongs to the Earth -- Taurus as the Bull of the Mother.   This new King is the Earth's defender, a new consciousness that will focus on doing what is necessary rather than maintaining the old user and abuser system by continuing to hurt the Earth and hurt ourselves.

Listen to your bit of Earth this weekend.   Visit a garden, a window-box, a forest, a mountain or a farm; go to a lake, the ocean, a river or stream. Smell and taste the air which is full of Spring here in the north and Fall in the southern hemisphere.     Open your senses and your heart and ask our mother the Earth what she needs from you.   And then do it, because it's necessary and you're the only one who can do it.   You'll find companions along the way that have heard the same voice and are also doing what is necessary.

Taurus is the sign of the zodiac concerned with the Earth and being good stewards of the Earth.   Unfortunately, more and more people are losing touch with Nature, staying indoors, focused on technological toys rather than opening themselves to the healing influence of Mother Nature.   Taurus is a good time to turn off our computers and TVs, put away our iPhones and just go outside!

The Wisdom of the Earth

The Earth has been communicating with us all along about the problems our consumer lifestyle causes her. But we haven't been listening.   Or else, we've listened and chosen to ignore her call.    But the devastating effects of climate change have intensified world-wide.   Our biosphere is suffering, forcing us to reconsider our relationship to the Earth.

Connecting to the Earth entails more than keeping our carbon emissions low and recycling, although these are ways we try to clean up the pollution generated by our modern life-style.    Connecting to the Earth isn't just going for a hike in the mountains or swimming in the ocean, although these are times when we can commune with nature.   Connecting to the Earth demands that we become conscious of our bodies, our own private bit of Earth, just as we have to become stewards of the Earth.   Connecting to the Earth begins when we can feel reverence for our land, our air, our waters, when we can "love all our relations' and the Earth.   We need to see ourselves not only as the problem but also as the solution.

Connecting to the Earth begins when we re-examine our beliefs about our place in Earth's ecosystem.   Can we use the Earth's resources however we want without consequences?    Or are humans just as much a part of Earth's ecology as wind and fire and water?   We need to discover what our relationship to the Earth is.   Are we the stewards of the Earth or perhaps Earth's consciousness itself?   Unless we discover our place in the Earth's living biosphere, we won't know how to honor the Earth.   We won't be able to fulfill our function for Her.

Before humanity looked to the heavens for their gods, we looked to Mother Earth as the supreme Goddess of life.    We were Earth's children, just as the animals, land, plants and waters were hers.   As we face the results of our own misuse and abuse of the Earth, we have to admit we haven't treated our mother very well.   Who among us would rape, degrade and pillage a beloved mother and nurturer in this way?   And yet we do, because our forefathers told us that the Earth was dead matter and we were special, meant to rule the Earth, not care for it.    And so we kill off species without a thought.    Unfortunately, as we kill the Earth, we kill ourselves.

Mother Earth Is Our Home

Whether we acknowledge it or not, we are held and sustained within the arms of Mother Earth.     Just as surely, the life of planet Earth is now in our hands.   Earth is the only home we have.    How have we gotten so detached from our home that we could come close to destroying it with our poisons and our waste, our wars and our unsustainable economy and population?   We are faced with the results of global warming, which are disrupting weather patterns, melting glaciers at alarming rates and heating up the gulf stream, which could bring on another Ice Age.   By allowing governments to ignore the signs of global warming we are taking away our children's future and destroying the matrix of life as we know it.

Cathy Pagano is the author of a new book, "Wisdom's Daughters: How Women Can Change the World". Cathy trained at the C. G. Jung Institut-Zurich in dream interpretation, then got her M.A. in Counseling Psychology in Feminine Spirituality, and along the way became a certified Life Coach. Cathy works with the tools of the imagination - dreams, alchemy, myths, astrology, symbolic language, storytelling, ritual - to awaken the Soul's wisdom.

I believe that Americans are called to a higher consciousness at this point in our history. We are called on to live up to our ideals and create the country our forefathers imagined. Inner consciousness needs to be acted upon for social justice.

Cathy believes that our writers and artists must take up our responsibility to create art that inspires, teaches and heals our humanity.

Cathy writes about political, psychological/spiritual, and cultural issues.
