The Cosmic Story: Cancer New Moon, July 4, 2016
"Mommy, did you know that we live inside the moon?"
My son Gregory, age 4
This year's Cancer New Moon falls on July 4 th , the United State's Independence Day. Our Birth Day. Could this signal a new birth for the US? Is there a way to declare our independence from a broken political, economic and cultural system as we did in 1776?
Cancer is the sign of the Mother, the womb of Life. And the US is a Cancer country. Cancer is a cardinal water sign that nurtures and protects, is creative and feels deeply. A sign of feminine power, it dispenses the Waters of Life upon all of us, but most especially women. Women's bodies are made to gestate, nurture, give birth to and feed our children, if we so choose. What a blessing to be a woman! We create and sustain Life.
This first water sign of the zodiac is where we create our emotional body, our specific emotional connection to Life, the story we tell ourselves about Life. The Moon is the ruler of Cancer, drawing upon the waters of creation in a tidal ebb and flow. She is the weaver of many stories, the womb in which our psyche/soul grows. The Moon speaks to us through our right-brain imagination--our visions, our dreams, our symbols, our stories.
Someone with an Aries Moon will live in a story of 'Who am I?', naturally seeking adventure and self-discovery; sometimes stopped by inner complexes and outer circumstances that need to be met and overcome. Someone with Moon in Cancer will want to mother, nurture and teach those who want to grow. The story of the Mother a Cancer Moon lives in will determine what kind of mothering s/he will do.
We are born with a soul story (your astrological Moon sign) that continues to grow and change with experience and self-awareness. Since the Moon symbolizes our Unconscious beliefs, self-awareness definitely promotes growth. When we stop drowning in our emotions but rather float on them, we can name what those emotions mean, so they become feelings which help us evaluate our life choices. Once we recognize the unconscious story we live in, we can begin to write our own stories.
The Moon, our beautiful night Light, waxes and wanes as it creates the energy for growth and abundance here on Earth. This Cancer New Moon offers us a chance to re-birth our emotional body. What do you desire to feel about yourself and your life? Can all of us give birth to a new emotional body, the grown-up, responsible, adult body that listens to its emotions, acknowledges them as valid feelings, which in turn tells us what we need to do to prosper in the world?
As my little boy once observed, we do live 'inside' the Moon. She circles around Mother Earth in a complex dance with the Sun while holding us in her embrace. She reflects back our conscious standpoint and works on it to best fit the goals of Life. We move to her rhythms, the rhythms of change, growth and process. Her cycles encompass all the stages of life: conception, gestation, birth, growth, fruition, decay, death and rebirth. All life moves to her rhythms, her comings and goings, just as the ocean tides move to her ebb and flow.
Ancient peoples believed that the Moon made the fertilizing moisture that makes living things grow and thrive: plants and animals as well as human beings. The Moon Mother, imagined as a vessel of water, blessing us with fertility and abundance, was the source of being and becoming. It was an aspect of the Great Mother who "established a unifying pattern for all living things, living and breathing in harmony, existing in an intricate and ineffable web. " 1
Just as our mothers were the womb of our 'being and becoming', so too is the Moon Mother the womb of our collective 'becoming'. As She travels across our sky, She shows us the beauty and mystery of Change against an eternal backdrop, for She is never the same on any given night. And neither are we.
