A phone call "guilted" me into using an internet radio station I own
for a useful purpose...exercise music and info for people with
Guilt can be a incredible motivator.
I was sitting at my desk Tuesday afternoon
staring at a blank computer screen trying to make my brain do something
it seems less able to do these days -- be creative. As progress into my
15th year with the progressive neurological disorder Parkinson's
disease, sometimes even trying to think is difficult.
I was roused from my reverie when my phone rang.
It was a very nice lady from Parkinson's Disease Foundation who wanted to talk to me about a press release I put out in November about my Internet Parkinson's disease radio station on Live 365. I was embarrassed. I had to tell her that the station got absolutely no support and that I couldn't afford the $99 a month for a radio station that nobody was listening to.
We chatted for awhile, and then I felt guilty.
I looked at Cabin Boy Radio, my current incarnation on Wavestreaming.
It has a good mix of music: classic rock, pop, comedy, specialty
programming on the weekends.
But what's unique about it. Not a damn thing.
Then, I thought of my neurologist telling me how important it is for "Parkies" to keep moving to the best of their ability. It dawned on me I had these Disco cuts downloaded onto my computer from an earlier radio incarnation, and I was playing some of them on Cabin Boy Radio.
I felt something I don't feel very often any more. Inspiration. My break kicked into creative gear.
So, I did some fresh production of liners and sweepers on my home computer audio program, cut some promos from the National Parkinson Foundation and the Parkinson Disease Foundation, some PD-related podcasts -- including Podiobook readings of two of my audio books on the subject of life with PD, threw everything together into a semblance of a working radio rotation, and gave birth to"
Parky Bill's Parkinson's Disease Disco.
It's music for anyone who needs to keep moving. If you're Stage I and newly diagnosed, this music is great for jogging. If you're in Stage II, this is good music for the treadmill and for physical therapy. If you're in Stage III, this is good to plug into a MP3 player for taking a leisurely stroll with a wife and the dog. If you're in stage IV, you can move your legs in beat with the music.
I like to move it, move it.
