The BLM Has No Heart

In my opinion- the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has no heart. Aside from carrying out cruel helicopter roundups of wild horses in the past which is tantamount to running some of them to death, last week they made the decision to kill 45,000 wild horses currently being held captive in government facilities throughout the US.

Why are they being held captive in the first place when clearly the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971 which Wild Horse Annie (Velma Bronn Johnston) worked so hard to get passed in Congress should have prevented this from happening? If you haven't already guessed why -- it is to allow privately owned cattle to graze on the land bequeathed to the horses and burros by virtue of this act.

I may be going out on a limb here but if this is public land -- shouldn't the public have a say on how it is used? Maybe meat eaters will side with the cattle barons and the BLM and maybe they won't - but for a certainty people who love and respect these beautiful wild horses of the West will not want them removed and killed for commercial interests.

Organizations which have interest and concern in helping our wild horses have been arguing for using birth control to minimize population growth. However, reading about one of their ways of implementing this had me shaking my head in disbelief. Can't we do anything right for these magnificent creatures who are a part of our western history?

There must be a compassionate way to do this.
