Emanuel Swedenborg is one of those exceedingly rare beings who probably shouldn't have existed, but undoubtedly did. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote of him and Dante, "They are not the kind of people you'd invite over for dinner. They're the kind of people you'd go see in a museum." And of Swedenborg himself, Emerson wrote in his "Representative Men": "
"One of the mastodons of literature, not to be measured by entire libraries of ordinary scholars."
He, in fact, was listed at the very top of Stanford University's "Terman Study of Genius" in 1921, being believed to be one of the three individuals with the highest estimated IQ in history, along with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and John Stuart Mill.
If Swedenborg's mastery of the written word weren't enough, the fact is that he is also, simultaneously, one of greatest scientists, as well as mystics, the world as ever known. As a scientist, he discovered one of planets, invented an ear trumpet for the deaf, and perhaps the earliest prototype of an airplane, centuries before the Wright brothers. As a mystic, he traveled through Heaven & Hell, conversing with angels, and voluminously recording his experiences in the spiritual realms.
If you tend to doubt any (or all) of this, then I suggest you take a look at the documentary linked to above. Sooner or later, I suspect you will probably be as unable to dismiss him any more than Mr. Emerson was.
