As Ed Schultz today dares President Obama to debate him on the TPP, he fails to explain to his viewers that this and its European pendant TTIP threaten the gains made by foreign workers, who have even more to lose the US workers, because the welfare state, that exists in one form or another in most countries of the world is one of the treaties' main targets.[tag]

Health care will go from being a right provided or regulated by the state to being a commercial enterprise as it is in the US. These treaties are designed to extend the reach of private enterprise and destroy every vestige of government control of the economy of signatory nations. They are designed, quite simply, to lock in capitalist globalization to the detriment of peoples of the entire world.

Americans political leaders who are fighting the TPP show their lack of worldliness when they fail to explain that it targets workers worldwide, and grass roots opponents are even more remiss in not enlisting the global community in their fight. It's time for the American left to stop being so parochial and realize that the trade agreements being foisted on the rest of the world by Washington, via compliant governments, target the global 99%, and can only be defeated by the concerted action of the global civil society. The mainstream media are of course remiss in not pointing out these truths, and the blogosphere is not doing much better.
