THREE WISHES

One lazy, hot, steamy, summer's day,
I had fishing on my mind.
Retirement had come my way and
My hands held too much of time.

So, grabbing up my rods and reels,
The tackle box firm in my grasp,
I hurried out before the sun had let
Too much more time elapse.

Oops, I mused, I still need bait.
One stop, I'll run in real quick.
That was the plan, get in, and get out,
Until realizing it was a trick.

There were thousands of lures, every kind,
Every color, to lure and to confuse.
All designed to boggle the mind,
Amazing with all of their views.

With eyes glazed over, my mind entranced,
I knew I'd never be able to choose.
With great relief, I heard a man say,
"This is what most people use."

And, wasting no time, with net in hand,
He scooped up twelve minnow fishes.
I must have been dizzy as I went on my way,
'Cause I heard these words, "Three wishes!"

Startled I turned to see who was speaking,
However, no soul was there to see.
I must be crazy, I'm hearing things!
Perhaps its the wind or the breeze?

I shook out the thought and hurried along,
Not wanting to waste anymore time,
To a secret place where the fish bite nice,
While I was still in my prime.

Down to the edge of the water I went
With tackle and rods and bait,
To a shady spot I had all picked out,
Threw the line in and sat back to wait.

I must have dosed off, the day was so nice,
When I imagined I heard it again.
Those same two words, "Three wishes," it said,
Surely, I'm going insane.

I sat up and glanced over shoulders and thought,
Someone is playing a joke.
However, no one was there, I was all alone,
Therefore, gave myself a good poke!

The day past slowly like all fishing days should,
I'd caught a few I was planning to cook.
I reached in the bucket to grab my last minnow,
All ready to implant the hook.

And, plain as day, once again, "Three wishes,
Three wishes, three wishes!" I heard.
My eyes bugged out! This bait's talking to me!
He just kept repeating those words!

I'm not cruel, and I could sure use those wishes,
Only I feared what people might think.
And, I really felt bad, as he sailed over my head,
Crying, "Three wishes! Three wishes!" Ker-plink!
