Soviet "ReUnion" -- The Sequel to "All (Not So) Quiet on the Eastern (Ukrainian) Front"
aka The Russian "OVA" (Occupy, Vote and Acquire) Strategy
Author's Note: This article is an adjunct to the "Commulism Series -- Part 11" (click here), providing perspective on recent and predicted Vladimir Putin actions and implications to the NATO Treaty. With China's emergence in full gear, Russia's resurrection plans are grand. In fact, Russia's rise noted in this article will directly follow China's, re-emerging as not only a military power but this time too, an economic one as well, dwarfing the threat it posed during the (first) Cold War.
The Crimea acquisition starts the clock.
Situation:
Crimea (and eastern Ukraine) gone.
Anyone who doesn't think so needs a wake up call, beginning with John Kerry and Angela Merkel. On the latter, since no one else will tell her, a Parliament House platformed hissy fit at this point in the process is as its being received in Moscow, laughable, and fueling momentum for the next step. As for John Kerry, he has met his match with lip service master Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who learned not to take a US Secretary of State very seriously when Hillary Clinton embarassingly presented him with a goofy big red toy relationship reset button, that looked like "the button".
So whining about Crimea is so yesterday's, if not two years ago debate/issue. With President Putin vis'-a-vis' Lavrov stating Russia will "respect" the referendum results "whatever they are", is about as sincere a comment as if he said he's awaiting a referendum result on whether the sun will rise in the east tomorrow.
It's a fait accompli...and has been since Khrushchev handed Crimea to Ukraine in the 50's.
Then his adding in what now will become standard Russian pre-occupation rationalization rhetoric, that Russia is very concerned with (it's trumped up) instability in eastern Ukraine, same as done with Crimea.
The real next step in the grand Putin plan is when and how for (East) Ukraine. Think same model as Crimea acquisition. Occupy to "protect" Russian speaking citizens, then a token referendum vote by eastern Ukrainians to become part of Russia, and then Vladimir Putin in "what a terrific guy I am" fashion, accommodating that request. A gratuitous self serving intervention model with precedence having been derivatively and ruthlessly used near the outbreak of World War II on Poland, Austria and Czechoslovakia regarding protecting German speaking peoples.
Adding even more fuel to this assessment is the reduction of foreign central banks holdings of US marketable securities by the Fed this week by a reported $106.1 billion by "some central bank". Aiding the "guess who" process, evidence a similar move by the Soviet Union prior to its 1956 invasion of Hungary, when it feared financial retaliation once it did.
