Former President George H W Bush pictured during his retirement

Yes, this writer is quite aware we're in the middle of what's called the holiday season and family get-together's. Yet it's also the season that included the Black Friday shopalooza and in a couple of weeks the Christmas gift extravaganza highlighted by the yearly promos giving her that shiny new Lexus-Mercedes, BMW-with a big bow tied on.

Yet...with the passing of "Poppy" Bush and all the platitudes thrown his way by our gushing corporate MSM and their flaks betraying the truth of this war criminal-though reading Caitlin Johnstone [1] the other day she put him in proper perspective-it got me thinking of what "Poppy" as well as other US presidents had done to others in the world during their tenure. Those who won't be celebrating with family members who were on the wrong end of a drone attack, missile strike, special ops raid, artillery, bombing run or targeted assassination ordered by POTUS "Force for Good" military.

Because for this citizen it's appalling, monstrous, horrific what POTUS is doing in the world in our name. It doesn't take much imagination to wonder why so many others in the world hate us, why they want to take revenge against us, why so many others in the world say in polls the US is the greatest threat to world peace.

However that's not what many, (most?) people in the US believe. Our military are "heroes"-though I doubt most in the military think of themselves in that way. That hero worship is just guilt felt from those who whoop it up whenever they see a guy in uniform, a guilt because they chose not to join.

Do many, most citizens in the US even consider what their country is doing in their name?

Maybe they don't care. Maybe knowing would upset their comfortable lifestyle. Maybe knowing it would cause cognitive dissonance, turn their world upside down from what they've come to believe.

It doesn't really matter what a US citizen believes. He, she certainly wasn't consulted. What matters is the military/industrial/political/security/surveillance complex gets what it wants, more money and power. It doesn't care how many innocents are killed in "collateral damage" or even whether we win or lose. Endless war fits the bill quite nicely.

So what if the domestic infrastructure crumbles, jobs are sent overseas, environmental denial reigns bringing with it more extreme weather events, hurricanes, droughts, wildfires, health care costs rise dramatically, real unemployment soars, incomes remain stagnant to 1970's levels, college student debt rises over $1 trillion while the counties national debt is over$ 21 trillion, an opiates epidemic rages and senseless gun violence occurs in our schools.

Besides we have no say. The electoral system is rigged by an avalanche of corporate, dark moneyed interests who underwrite the campaigns of those they select and get elected to do their bidding. To say we have a free, democratically elected government of, by and for the people is nothing but a big lie, propaganda perpetrated by the ruling elites in this "make believe" democracy of ours.

Sometimes it feels surreal. People staring at their smartphones twittering away. Then when a former president dies he's extolled as some great man, never revealing the truth he was a war criminal who should have gone before a Nuremburg type tribunal and prosecuted for the war crimes he committed. That doesn't happen of course because only the losers in war are held accountable for the crimes they committed. Besides why else does the US refuse to join the ICC, International Criminal Court knowing full well our "officials" would be prosecuted for the war crimes they committed.

The war crimes the US has committed since the end of WWII makes a mockery of the post war Nuremburg tribunal which made aggressive war the highest crime.

The saddest thing of all it didn't have to be this way. It wasn't ordained. But that would have meant we the people would have been vigilant, skeptical of our government and its leaders demanding they represent the peoples interests.

We weren't thus we're complicit with what our government has done in our name.

As Chris Hedges said, "Innocence is complicity".
