I sit here and I side with that honeybee,
the only one that I have seen
on this beautiful island so far.
I have walked the faerie paths
searching for the sea.
I got turned around
and came out on a different island
where the sea was leaden,
her waters heavy and flat,
her waves barely breaking on the naked rocks.
I sat and said a prayer to Spirit,
promising myself that next time
I would pick up one of those little maps
with the numbered trails.
I took a sip of water from my thermos.
At first I was hopelessly sad
for all of us and everything.
I wanted to go back
to where that solitary bee was working the blossoms
and pretend that none of this happened.
But my getting lost seemed so inevitable!
I waited to see if this was only a test
of the emergency broadcast system.
And all at once I began to hum.
My nose began to vibrate.
The whole universe began to pulse and hum.
I woke from my trance and wrote this down
before heading off
to the next flowering bush.
