"Power, money, persuasion, supplication, persecution -- these can lift at a colossal humbug -- push it a little -- weaken it a little over the course of a century; but only laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand." -- Mark Twain
This is not a laughing matter: The world thinks we're hilariously stupid -
dangerously so.
And Donald Trump is to blame.
Of course, The Donald is the very cartoon of the boorish, arrogant, bigoted American, the persona dismissed by foreign countries as mere entertainment and not worth a second thought as far as substance. We knew all of that from the time Trump announced his candidacy. We expected him to be a form of entertainment.
But not quite so much at America's expense.
Mediaite:
[Ann] Coulter said Trump is "fun," but Maher fired back and cried, "This is not entertainment, this is supposed to be a country!"
Even before the election, his foreign "policies" have burned so many
bridges, the bridges Obama rebuilt after Bush's disastrous cowboy diplomacy,
that will be even more difficult to rebuild after world ridicule.
Some people are suspicious that Trump is really playing a joke on us all,
exposing the American public to ridicule as idiots. If it is a joke, it's a
treasonous one.
It's The Media, Stupid!
Of course, the media has played into the hands of this bit of treason, but can
it help it? Is the media supposed to dismiss Trump's rhetoric and antics as
mere posturing? The conservative electorate, the crowd that supports Trump has
found a voice and it won't let go of the spotlight, no matter what it looks
like to the rest of the world. Trump supporters are, after all, xenophobic and
proud of it. What care they if the entire world is laughing? Aren't they all
stupid ragheads and greasers anyway? It's THEIR TIME to shine, goddammit!
Of course, the U.S. press has taken to bashing Trump with hilarious tidbits.
Mediaite found one site that was able to put together some laughable pieces:
According to a 1993 biography Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump, Donald Trump's then-wife Ivana Trump told her friends that Donald was skilled at erecting skyscrapers, but not much else.
