Louisiana congressional Representative Steve Scalise spoke in 2002 before ex KKK grand wizard David Duke's organization that the Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled a "hate group." This is a white nationalist organization that espouses white supremacy. It is an organization founded on race hatred, founded on the same ideology that buttressed slavery and American apartheid for almost 200 years.

Scalise claims that he was unaware of the organization's ideology, a notion that David Duke himself has suggested is utter crap.

Now, John Boehner and fellow republicans are defending Scalise. Boehner called his speaking engagement a "lapse in judgment," and suggests that we all move on.

Newly elected Representative Mia Love, the latest black face Republicans use to deflect the fact that their party became the home for racists enraged by the civil rights gains of the 60s, stated, "It is difficult for me to comment on Rep. Scalise's speaking engagement from 12 years ago. I have not spoken with him about that particular day."

Is she suggesting that there was something unique about that particular day? Maybe he woke up feelin' kinda racist, like you or I might wake up grumpy? Don't we all have that sometimes? I know that I woke up the other day with the overwhelming compunction to join the Klan. It might have been the pie I had the night before. Oh well.

And black Republicans wonder why the vast majority of other blacks hold them in contempt. Representative Love had no problems accusing the Congressional Black Caucus of using "their positions to "ignite emotions and ignite racism when there isn't."

I don't know how much more racist you can get than a David Duke white supremacist organization, but Rep. Love calls no racism there. Like all Republicans, of course, she has achieved the 7th level of right wing Martin Luther Kingian perfection and does not see color anymore (except in rainbows and polychromatic unicorns" ahhhhh), which means that she also does not see race hatred. Such a lovely blindness. It's just coincidence that her status, paycheck and power depend on it. I'm sure she'd also confuse a cross burning with a weeny roast. Perhaps to her, Eric Garner's death was just a bit of public S&M play and he forgot the safe word.

It seems that to be a modern Republican--black or white--you have to accept race hatred as an acceptable political position and racists and white supremacists as legitimate constituencies with legitimate agenda. Scalise said as much in comparing his speech before the Duke group to a speech before the League of Women Voters, which he called "a pretty liberal" group.
