Why should anyone want to rescue the Republican Party? To preserve duality, and because there is a genuine functional duality between the two parties, though it is obscured by the Right because they are busy betraying one of their heftiest demographics, and all their energy goes into maintaining the delusion that they give a rat's ass for the Middle, or any other 'class'.
Let's cease using that word, "class". It has connotations far beyond income, and income is no way to classify people anyway. It's stale, like many expressions crafted as we found our way from Royalty to God knows What we'll end up with, but Democracy is one idea. Most of my friends are not wealthy, but none of them is "middle class
To preserve the GOP I would first spotlight their hijacking of the Lower Class, and point out that the empty promises they proffer aren't worth the paper they weren't even printed on; and that what's more, they have genuine reasons for modifying the inevitable economic end game: Socialism, which may indeed spell the end of individuality.
How can the party of Management not be in a minority? And how can Labor not be a majority? How do we balance these two givens? The balance comes with the power of money in the hands of the elite. If those hands, however, are chosen by the hoards, they have to earn their respect and deserve the honor, or the hoards will overturn them, which in fact they are about to do. The Nation's average, well- informed intelligence is growing. Where will the GOP turn next? Of course it's stupid to hate difference, and even more stupid to consider ownership God-given approbation. We got that notion from the Puritans, who -by the way- were kicked out of England for a good reason: they themselves were intolerant.
Houses of Lords and Commons is how the British handle it. One house for Everyone, and one for the Establishment.
Labor and Management, I calls it.
But to help the GOP reclaim its heritage, is to appreciate its conclusion that power must be wielded across the board, and not exclusively the domain of Washington, especially with internal concerns. Our States for the most part are as big as many countries; and capable of maintaining order, discipline, infrastructure, social services, and records by themselves. If not, they should doff the title State, and become Wards of the Nation until they get their acts together.
Washington has too much to do and- not surprisingly-does none of it well. The GOP should stand for a clearer definition of how Power is distributed throughout the Nation, if the Democrats are going to focus on centralizing it to the President and Washington. That seems a legitimate philosophical discussion.
What the 1% Cynics of the GOP have done instead, by pandering to the far Right for votes, is muddy the waters of their intentions to the point that all the good that government can do is left to the Left to procure in the form of legislation, while the Right Wing stumbles around, trying to fly straight but going in circles, trying to disassociate themselves from the lesser minds they courted during their campaigns.
Their biggest blunder is Trump, who in his simplicity is trying to legislate buffoonery, bigotry, and religious fanaticism, bereft as he is of the ability to perceive what his party is all about: Bait and Switch, plain and simple, to the 99%Simpletons who voted for something that does not exist, a world of White Preference, divinely authored.
So he's going to keep all those stupid promises, like walls, imaginary and actual, the effort of which inevitably leads to all those lies. What the Grand Old Party have missed, like the prophets who warned us that our only option to the threat of Armageddon was prayer, when atomic power was actually a resource they didn't begin to appreciate; what the GOP didn't see coming was the internet, and the overall intelligence of the American People. Increasingly, the not-too-bright are precipitating to the Right, tarnishing its image irretrievably, for while big money is theirs, big thinking is in short supply. Winning seems to have overtaken all other aims, to the extent of open and admitted voter suppression at all levels of government. They should be shamed, but it doesn't seem to be in their vocabulary. Ignorance is their ally, and before long it will be their only ally, and their only alibi. "Dissing" other large ethnic groups of us is cutting off our noses to spite the face of Democracy.
