Routines and Rituals

Escaping the rat race

Do routines and rituals bring comfort even as they hold us in place and keep us from growing? Do they serve us or do we serve them? How much of my identity is me and how much my rituals and routines? What happens when I drive to work a different way, or shave the left side first or skip my morning prayers? Am I diminished or expanded? What would happen if I thought about Race or Politics differently? If I felt different about burgers and fries?

Could routines and rituals be the triumph of form over content? No doubt the rituals and routines in my habitual thoughts and actions bring comfort. But don't they keep small, narrow and confined, too? What creativity, innovation and unimagined joy might come if I used rituals and routines only as a means of moving beyond them, to new rituals and routines and then beyond them?
