Instead of immediately calling for purging Democratic Party leadership, insist on one or more narrow performance goals. The DLC, or Congressional Progressive Caucus or a new group, must, to get Progressive support back, pledge, and act, as forcefully as necessary, to obtain certain policy goals. Widespread political education is necessary employing even "liberal" newscasters and pundits of television, print journalism and radio. One relatively less controversial would be for the National Interstate Compact (NICPV) for the Popular Vote. Let Democrats be democratic! The correct operation of NICPV would guarantee that the winner of the popular vote became president. Ten states plus D.C., representing 60% of votes needed for enforcement upon electors of the Electoral College, have agreed to it. Concentrate even national democratic resources on getting it implemented in enough remaining states to do this.

A second policy goal would be to push any Afghanistan force use authorization in Congressional committees out onto the floor. Make both houses vote to cut off all funding for U.S. military actions in Afghanistan. Alternatively, force a vote on resolutions to disapprove further expenditure for Afghanistan. Really "shut down the government" by noncooperation moves until opponents give in. Declare victory, give the President 6 months to get all 8,400 U.S. troops, plus civilian officials and Afghan "allies", out. Promise to stay out forever. U.S mercenaries (contractors) may remain at their own assumed risk. We've done 15 years of war -- occupation, with bin Laden, Saddam, Kaddafi, Morsi etc. dead or jailed. Enough is enough!

Here is a third harder, longer-term goal. Republicans explicitly promise a balanced budget [amendment.] This is based on "National Debt Terrorism," their claim that endless running of deficits will eventually dry up capital for private investment and bankrupt the U.S. It's a bald-faced Big Lie! Even Trump admitted, in a May CNN interview, that "you [the government] prints the money." Democrats must adopt creation of greenbacks as a goal and get their allies in all educational venues, liberal TV pundits and newscasters, radio, magazines, newspaper columnists, letter writers, economic educators in schools, to educate the public on the historical facts and arguments that are persuasive on this subject! If a balanced budget was ever enacted and enforced, it would cause a disastrous collapse of our economy, especially for America's poor. So why should not Democrats revive an equally "radical" (but factual, historical) proposal to create, one time, greenbacks, U.S. notes, electronically only, without debt, and without taxation! A President can do this by order to the Secretary of the Treasury, especially with some party members in each house. These would be used in two ways. First, as in Dennis Kucinich's NEED act, spent slowly into the economy to provide direct federal government jobs, at living wages, in infrastructure repair and human capital improvement like infant mothering assistance, national daycare, Pre-K, remote medical clinics, etc. Hire at all skill levels from a few forensic accountants through contractors to many pick and shovel guys, house painters and mothering assistants. Second, use greenbacks to "top off" Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid balances so their alleged bankruptcies are put far off again. Inflation has been controlled at times in the past (see Volcker.) Therefore it can be controlled. Set a goal of inflation at 1% higher than the Fed's. 2%. No insecure, real American citizen humans care whether by the Rule of 70 the price of something they want to buy doubles in 20 years rather than 30.

There must be a return, by elected Democrats, to Profiles in Courage, to some Statesmanship, some risk of losing even top offices by being primaried and voted out. But it is necessary that there be an organized drive of educated citizens behind them!

I could be Bernie Sanders older brother by similarity. I was born in Manhattan, 1940, he, about a year later, in Brooklyn. I too am a white male American. A retired college professor of philosophy. We both were born of Jewish parents. I was (more...)
