Rangel steps down as the heat rises on Pelosi to keep her promise to run the most ethical congress.
Charlie Rangel, under a cloud of ethics accusations, has requested permisison from speaker Nancy Pelosi to take a "leave of absence" from his powerful position as head of the House Ways and Means Committee. The job includes responsibility for dealing with tax issues and Rangel has a big ethic tax issue-- failure to report income from a property he owned in the Carribean.
Rangel made the announcement at a press conference this morning at which he refused to take questions, but added that he'd offered to "do this from the very, very beginning."
