"Pretty Woman" reflects Wisconsin workers

My wife had TNT on the other night as I worked at the computer and I got sucked into watching a movie from the past, Pretty Woman. Though I didn't think Richard Gere or Julia Roberts looked any different today than they did years ago, the movie was quite dated by the humongous cell phones. It was an interesting view of our past, but my favorite part of the movie was the scene where Vivian (Roberts) returns to a very upscale dress shop that had turned her away the day before when she came in dressed in her 'working' clothes looking for a nice outfit. Wearing a strikingly beautiful outfit, carrying many more expensive outfits Edward (Gere) had paid an outlandish amount to purchase for her, she confronted the sales person who had rejected her the day before, noting the commission based salesperson had made a BIG mistake.

My mind drifted to today's events in Wisconsin and in my vivid imagination rushed to the possibility of an interesting allegory. I could see the Wisconsin governor and Republican legislature as the initial upscale dress shop, and Vivian representing the hard working teachers and union workers who return to Madison in January telling the recalled governor and legislators, BIG mistake. Make your triumphant victory message loud enough that it can be heard in Ohio, Indiana, Maine, Florida and other states where the Taliban-like wing of the Republican party has hijacked their states and pushed legislation to redistribute wealth by taking from workers and the middle class to give to big business and their wealthy contributors. Let voters everywhere be encouraged to vote for a return to common sense and the idea of doing what's good for all citizens rather than just a privileged few.
