Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declaring West bank settlements do not violate international law

Yesterday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared US policy toward settlements in the Israeli occupied West Bank are no longer "inconsistent" with international law. Prior to yesterday "official" US policy was consistent with international law. To wit: It is illegal for Israel to build settlements in the West Bank.

Let's be clear the West Bank is Israeli occupied territory. It is unambiguous. Under international law it is illegal for an occupying power to build anything in occupied territory.

However, with Israel's successful 1967 Six-Day war with Syria, Egypt and Jordan, Israel became an occupying power. Seized the Golan Heights from Syria (annexed last year by Israel), the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt (since returned in 1982 by a peace treaty signed with Egypt in 1979), Gaza (Israel unilaterally withdrew in 2005), the West Bank including East Jerusalem (from Jordan). In 2017 Trump announced Jerusalem was the capital of Israel and the US embassy moved there from Tel Aviv in 2018.

Despite international law Israel has built multiple settlements in the West Bank housing mostly orthodox Jews, confiscating Palestinian owned land, bulldozing their homes and destroying their olive groves.

The mostly orthodox Jews in these settlements view the Palestinian's as squatters on land granted to the Jews by God over 3500 years ago Thus Jews retaking land believe it is rightfully theirs. Even though Palestinian's have owned and lived on these lands for hundreds of years.

Though past US administrations "officially" objected to Israel building these settlements in the West Bank they turned a blind eye to the expansion where now nearly a half million Jews have settled.

To complicate matters Israel has has built a 26' foot wall around the West Bank, built roads from the settlements used exclusively by Jewish settlers. Meanwhile Palestinian's must present themselves at numerous check points before they are permitted to enter Israel proper.

Since the UN established Israel in 1948 over the years Israeli governments have entered into negotiations with the Palestinian's to establish a separate state to include Gaza and the West Bank.

That of course has never been accomplished leading this observer to hypothesize Israel never intended for a separate Palestinian state be established.

Israel flaunts international law knowing the US, particularly the Congress will always support Israel with the majority beholden to the Israeli lobby that underwrite their electoral campaigns.

Thus Israel, like no other country in the world can do anything it pleases with impunity.

Essentially there is international law for Israel and the US and international law for everyone else.

Pompeo made that clear saying the Israeli settlements were no longer "inconsistent" with international law.

One could say we're not exactly the dystopia Orwell depicted in his novel, "1984" but pretty close.
