I had to fly out to Northern California in late April for a week, actually to the Concord area, but since I had been raised in San Francisco, I found time to revisit some old haunts. When I was young, I used to spend endless hours wandering around Chinatown, taking in all the exotic sights, smells and sounds, and found that even today I am quite spellbound with the same adventure. One begins to slip into a Zenlike state as one just surrenders to the crowded storefronts, the jaunt of the multiethnic march of people, the endless arrays of colorful merchandise, artifacts and wall murals, peppered with racing kids or grizzled elders in one of the most dynamic Chinatowns outside the Chinese mainland, a real tribute to the industry, business acumen and culture of the Chinese citizens of San Francisco.
