Mitch Epstein was born in 1952 in Holyoke, Massachusetts. He studied at RISDy (Rhode Island School of Design) in Providence from 1971-2, and then at the Cooper Union, in New York City, from 1971-74. His first teaching job was assisting Ben Lifson at Harvard University in 1977.
Epstein’s biography at artnet’s Artist Works Catalogues for the years between 1978 and 2006 list numerous highlights, including, “1992-1996 – Makes six trips to Vietnam to photograph and collaborate with a Vietnam novelist. In 1995, the collaboration falls through due to political complications. The Vietnamese photographs are published with the artist’s own text in -- Vietnam: A Book of Changes.”
From 2006 to 2008, Epstein was awarded the Berlin Prize in Arts and Letters by the American Academy in Berlin, and he moved to the Academy for a 5-month residency.
Presently, Epstein lives with his wife and daughter in New York.
