Orwellian Life in the U.S.

Much as I love living in an Orwellian society, after eight years of it, it is really getting tiresome.   The secret searches of my neighbors’ houses, phone records, bank records and library records by the government are just becoming an annoyance.  How am I supposed to sleep when the FBI or some other government group is sneaking into the house next door?  I really had no idea that so many of my neighbors were terrorists until 9/11, I just thought that they were annoying.  There is one good thing about the Patriot Act, now I can get that moron living across the street arrested for writing frustrated letters to the Bus Company.

All those things are great, but I really love the changes in the English language since 9/11 the most.  Take the creative theosaurical modifications made for common every day words.  For instance, how-a-bout the mellow words “enhanced interrogation” standing in for the admittedly vile “torture”, or perhaps “rendition” substituted for “kidnapping.”  Improvements to my conversation skills abound; such as; “Mary was sent to Cuba by way of rendition and now will be subject to enhanced interrogation while her civil liberties are violated.”

The best part of this Orwellian society is the excuses made to stop people from freely traveling across the U.S.  Now we have our no fly lists and random searches of trains and cars.  It has all been really fun, but I still need to get to work on time.  Can you please ask them to perform only one checkpoint for terrorists across state lines at a time?

Also, the now random acts of torture by police with tasers since 9/11 are ruining my clothes.  I enjoy electroshock therapy as much as the next guy, but let’s get serious; wetting oneself is always embarrassing and costly.    But I guess with the depression (oh wait, I mean economic downturn) it is good for the local Gap.

What I guess I am really asking is, when is the government going to stop trying to act out the book 1984 and move on to another one?
