My friend experienced what might be considered voter suppression in Florida, home of the hanging chads.

She wrote on Facebook this morning:

I am SO annoyed with the state of Florida and how hard they make it to vote. If your voters ID had no party affiliation you weren't allowed to vote. How stupid is that! And, how did I miss a little check box for party affiliation? That's like asking you what you want for lunch in 4 years. Grrrrr...So, my beautiful niece voted today for the first time, and they sent me away. I've already printed and filled out the paper declaring a party affiliation so this won't happen again. By all reports, there are many upset "would be voters" here tonight. Shame on you Florida!

Some of the comments included:

Our primaries are not a good representation of what our state wants. During a primary you should vote for who you want, your party affiliation or lack there of should not matter. I know a lot of frustrated Independents and Republicans.

Florida has had a lot of issues throughout the years with voting.

Yes same prob here! Independent = no vote yesterday

I don't like it either but I have lived in Florida since 1986 and this has always been the case. It is not new.

You should have been able to declare at the polls. Take a look into that. Florida had other issues at other polling places (Polk county) turning away Democrats telling them that it was only a Republican primary. I'm in Texas with stupid voter laws too, however when I checked in I had to declare which party primary I wanted to vote in. (I am non party too). I would call the campaign you wanted to vote for and tell them what happened. They will look into it faster that the election board. I am so sorry you should not been left out of the process. Personally I believe in open primaries.

You've been Bushwhacked., just like Gore.

What are your thoughts? have any of you experienced anything similar?
